Monday Memos: Book Review of Lessons In Falling by Diana Gallagher

The girl in the photo does not know what will happen in the next moment. She doesn’t know that when she lands, everything changes”- Savannah from ‘Lessons in Falling’

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to review a YA contemporary book called ‘Lessons in Falling’ by Diana Gallagher, which was provided for review by Spencer Hill Press. This is a very interesting book about friendship, love race relations, & finding your own voice. Fair warning, this book does contain some racial slurs directed towards the Hispanic community as well as discussion about depression & attempted suicide, so if any of these subjects are triggering to you, this is your warning. So now let’s get to the review. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

‘Lessons in Falling’ is a young adult contemporary novel that revolves around the life of a young former gymnast named Savannah who has recently given up the sport due to an injury. Although Savannah can continue to compete in gymnastics, she spends most of the book running from the sport due to her overwhelming fear that she will fail. Also, throughout the book Savannah must deal with pressure from her family to continue her gymnastics career, pressure from her best friend Cassie to not continue, as well as fear that she will cause her family financial hardship by not receiving a gymnastics college scholarship like they always planned. Along with this, Savannah has to deal with some unwanted attention/consequences when she begins romance with a Hispanic classmate named Marcos, during a time when racial tensions are high in her school. Lastly, Savannah has to decide if Cassie (the person who she has always put all her faith in) truly has her best interests at heart, or if her best friend is actually stopping her from becoming the person she’s meant to be.

First of all I want to say that I really liked this book. It was an interesting story with characters that were well written, & a plot that kept you interested, & even surprised you from time to time. Savannah was a really good protagonist, because you never felt frustrated with her choices (even if you don’t agree with everything she does), & in the end you really feel yourself rooting for her. Marcos was a well written love interest who really complimented Savannah’s character, & who you also found yourself rooting for. The last character I wanted to discuss was Cassie. There are many points in the story that you’ll find yourself hating Cassie because of how she treats Savannah, but you also understand why she does what she does & in the end you find yourself hoping that Cassie can overcome her personal demons. There is so much more I’d like to talk about regarding this book, but I don’t want y’all you be stuck here all day. I would definitely give this book a rating of 5 smiley faces, & suggest that EVERYONE add it to their TBR.

YouTube Wednesday: Maddie and Bee…the rising BookTube duo that you need to know about!

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to discuss an amazing sister duo from the U.K. who have an AMAZING channel that you need to subscribe to right now. Seriously just go ahead & subscribe to them right this second, I’ll wait. Did you do it? Well if you need motivation to click on that subscribe button then continue reading & by the end of this post you’ll be convinced. Now let’s get to the videos. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The 1st video we’re going to discuss is Maddie and Bee’s ‘Top 5 Middle Grade Books!’ video, which was uploaded on January 30, 2015. I really loved this video because in it we not only get to see Maddie and Bee’s fun, bubbly personalities, but we also get a glimpse at their reading tastes. It’s also really fun to see how comfortable they are in front of the camera, which gives them a more inviting vibe. The next video we’re going to talk about is ‘Totally Should’ve Book Tag’, which was uploaded on April 27, 2016 (you can check out the video below). This is a really fun tag video that shows alot of interesting “should’ve” book scenarios that will have you thinking about your own answers to these questions. Again we get a deeper glimpse into who these BookTubers are as readers, which makes you feel like you’re talking about bookish things with your friends.

Next up we have Maddie and Bee’s ‘YA Romance Recommendations!’ video, which was uploaded on February 11, 2017. If you’re looking for some fun, interesting YA romance novels to end your summer with, then this video gives you some great places to start! Also, in this video you see how much more confident Maddie and Bee have grown in front of the camera by showing off their fun personalities even more, & really helping us feel as if we know them. The last video we’re discussing today is the ‘Our Collaborative Writing Process’ video, which was uploaded on May 22, 2018 (you can check out the video below). This has to be one of my favorite videos on their channel, because it really shows us how difficult it can be to colaborate with someone. In this video Maddie and Bee explain to us the mistakes they’ve made as a writing duo, and how they fixed these mistakes to form a better team. It’s really whenever you see YouTubers share their writing tips & tricks because then you can learn from their experience & apply it to your own writing. If you are an inspiring writer this is a MUST SEE video for you!

Monday Memos: Book Review of ‘The Lives of Desperate Girls’

“There was something so tragic about the acts of desperate girls. My helpless heart wished that I could write a different ending to the story, that I could have kept Chloe from disappearing and delivered Helen safely home. But trusting the wrong person wasn’t the only kind of desperate act. Wishing for the impossible could break you just as swiftly.Whether you wanted someone to love you or someone to protect you, it was hard to be a girl in need.” – Jenny Parker ‘The Lives of Desperate Girls’.

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to review a Young Adult mystery book entitled ‘The Lives of Desperate Girls’ by Canadian author MacKenzie Common. ‘The Lives of Desperate Girls’ is MacKenzie Common’s debut book, and this copy was provided for review by Penguin Random House Canada. MacKenzie Common is an author who is originally from Newfoundland but grew up in Northern Ontario. I do need to add a trigger warning due the sexual assault that is present in this novel. There’s a lot we have to discuss about this book, but keep in mind that this will be a spoiler-free review so let’s get into it. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!
‘The Lives of Desperate Girl’s centers around high school junior Jenny in the aftermath of the disappearance of her best friend Chloe. Jenny has always felt inferior to her friend due to Chloe’s wealth, popularity, and ease in social situations, in contrast to Jenny who is the exact opposite in all of these areas. Jenny has a hard time adjusting to life without Chloe, which is made more difficult when a local Indigenous girl named Helen is found murdered. Jenny soon begins to investigate Helen’s murder with a classmate named Tom, who has a reputation of being a loner in school. As Jenny finds out more about who Helen was as a person, she also learn more about her country’s history with racism, as well as the racism that still lingers to this day. Although Jenny is very dedicated to finding out who killed Helen and if this has anything to do with Chloe’s disappearance, she struggles with a big secret that she and Chloe have tried to keep buried for nearly a year.

Now we’ve arrived to the question of whether you should invest in this book or not. I will start this off by saying that I had to give this book 1 smiley face because it had a lot of problems. One aspect of the book that I didn’t enjoy was the romance between Jenny and Tom. I definitely felt that their romance escalated quickly and then towards the end of the book his character became less and less important to the story so the romance seemed pointless. The mystery aspect of the book also lacked that element of immersion that made you feel that you were never really invested in the story. One positive aspect was the representation of Indigenous people due to the various Indigenous characters we saw throughout the story. I will say that this book does contain sexual assault as well as very strong language that is not appropriate for all ages so if this is trigger or offensive to you I would skip this one. All in all this book felt like it tried to tackle so many topics at once and because of this was stretched too thin to accomplish what it set out to do.

Monday Memos: Book Review of ‘180 Seconds’ by Jessica Park

YOU CAN’T REACH WHAT’S IN FRONT OF YOU UNTIL YOU LET GO OF WHAT’S BEHIND YOU“- from ‘180 Seconds’

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to discuss a new book by author Jessica Park called ‘180 Seconds’, which was provided by ‘Skyscape’ and ‘Two Lions’ for review. Jessica Park grew up in the Boston area and attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has also previously written several books entitled ‘Clear, ‘Relatively Famous’, as well as the series ‘Left Drowning’ and ‘Flat-out Love’. This review will be spoiler free, so if you’re ready let’s find out whether you should add this book to your summer TBR or if 180 seconds of your time is more than this book deserves. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

‘180 Seconds’ is about a college junior named Allison who lived within the foster care system until she was adopted at the age of 15. Due to what she experienced as a child, Allison is not comfortable forming strong bonds with people, which includes her adoptive father Simon. The only person that Allison feels truly close to is her childhood best friend Steffi. All of this begins to change when Allison unwillingly participates in a social experiment conducted by social media star Esben Baylor. The 180 seconds that this experiment takes sends Allison on a path to discover what love and friendship mean to her, as well as the realization that sometimes the strongest people hide the darkest demons.
Personally I really loved this book as a whole. Immediately we are introduced to a cast of interesting characters that show new layers the further into the story you go. Allison is a relatable, interesting protagonist that we see tremendous growth from throughout the course of the novel. Esben is also an interesting character that at first glance appears to be the stereotypical perfect love interest, but is later shown to have much more to him.  However one of my favorite characters had to be Allison’s adoptive father Simon. He is our diverse character in ‘180 Seconds due to the fact that he is gay however, Jessica Park does an amazing job to show that Simon is also fun, funny, and above all an amazing father (seriously this guy has a superhuman amount of patience). Although I did thoroughly enjoy this book, there were a few places here and there where the book lagged a bit and I felt myself skimming the pages a bit until the story picked up again. Although this didn’t happen often, I did have to knock my rating down from 5 to 4 smiley faces because of this. Also, this book does mention sexual assault twice in reference to two of the characters’ backstories so if you are triggered by this please proceed with caution. In conclusion I would say that this book is definitely worth the read due to its interesting mix of fun romance and deep emotional topics.

‘Learning To Fly’ is about a 12 year girl named  Max. She is a tomboy who enjoys hunting, fishing, playing sports, and just generally having fun with her next door neighbors Peter and Kyle. Max’s world is turned upside down when she discovers the world of competitive cheerleading. At first Max decides that the glitter and bows are too girly for her, but through some persuasion from her dad, Max decides to give cheerleading a try. Throughout the course of the story Max finds friends, enemies, and possibly two potential love interests (let the shipping wars begin!). YouTube Wednesday: Sophie’s Series…the booktuber that you will love fangirling out with

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to talk about an amazing BookTuber that you NEED to be subscribed to. I’m serious. Go subscribe right now & then we’ll continue. Don’t worry I’ll wait. Did you subscribe? Awesome! Now that you’ve already made one great decision today, make another one by sticking around to find out why you’ll love Sophie’s channel (trust me you made the right decision by subscribing). Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The first video that we’re going to talk about is Sophie’s ‘The Booktube Newbie Tag!’, which was uploaded on March 27th, 2015 (you can check out this video below). This is a really great video to start off with because it allows you to not only get a glimpse of Sophie’s personality, but also her love of books. In this video Sophie allows us to really feel like we know her by explaining why she started a BookTube channel, what book/book series got her into reading, and what fun & unique things she can bring to the BookTube community. After watching this video you’ll feel like Sophie is already your bestie, and it will leave you wanting to know even more about her. Luckily for us, we can learn more about Sophie in her ‘FIVE OF MY AUTO BUY AUTHORS’ video, which was uploaded on July 10th, 2015. Honestly you can learn A LOT about a person based off of who their fav authors are. When you’re a bookworm you read A LOT of books, and I mean A LOT of books so because of this, we all have a small list of authors who we love so much that you can blindly buy any book they release and know that you’ll likely fall in love with it. It’s fun to see our fav BookTubers nerd out with us.

Next up we have Sophie’s ‘BOOKS I’M BRINGING TO COLLEGE!’ video, which was uploaded on September 26th, 2015. Ok, real talk for a second everyone. Now if you’re a book nerd then you know that this is a problem that you either have faced, or will face in your lifetime. For most of us books are like family, they take you to far away places when you need an escape, put a smile on your face during good times, and offer you a warm sheet to cry on during bad times. So the prospect of leaving behind these treasures when we pursue higher education is really sad. Luckily, Sophie is here to remind us that it’s fine if you take some of your books with you on this adventure they call college, and even describes how she decided which books to take. This video is a MUST WATCH for all book addicts. The last video that we’re going to talk about is Sophie’s ‘ANTICIPATED RELEASES OF 2016’ video, which was uploaded on January 9th, 2016 (you can check out the video below). In this video Sophie gives us a list of some of the INCREDIBLE books she’s excited for this year, and also a quick summary of why she’s excited for these books. If you love books then this video will definitely get you hyped for the many awesome 2016 releases (it’s going to be a VERY good year people of the internet!). So now that you’re completely addicted to Sophie’s channel, go check out the rest of her videos, I promise that this is one channel that you’ll constantly have on replay.

YouTube Wednesday: readbyzoe…the Booktube channel that your subscription box NEEDS!

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to discuss an awesome new YouTube readbyzoechannel that every book lover will want to subscribe to right now (well finish reading this post and then go subscribe to the channel…ok? Ok). On this channel Zoe gives her viewers book recommendations, shows us book/bookmark hauls, and proves that she’s a fangirl just like the rest of us (so we can all obsess over our OTPs together yay!!!). So if you’re ready to release your inner nerd then let’s talk about some of the videos on this amazing channel. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The first video that we’re going to talk about is Zoe’s ‘BOOK UNHAUL! [#1]’ video which was uploaded on June 28th, 2014 (you can check out this video below). Honestly this is one of the first book unhauls that I remember watching and I really like the concept of this type of video. Just in case you’re not familiar with this type of video, a book unhaul is when a BookTuber discusses books that they are going to get rid of because they did not enjoy the book, decided that they will probably never read the book, for various other reasons. These are really great videos to check out because you can get a person’s honest opinion about a book before spending money on it. After watching several videos on a BookTuber’s channel you usually get a good idea of what their personal tastes are, and if you have similar tastes then their opinion of a book will probably match your opinion. The next book that we’re going to talk about is Zoe’s ‘BOOKS I’M TAKING TO COLLEGE’ video, which was uploaded on August 22nd, 2014. Now as every book lover knows, if we could we would literally carry our book collections with us everywhere (and I realize that you can do that with e-books but that’s a different topic for a future blog post). If you are/will be living in an apartment or dorm room in the near future then this is an excellent video for you to check out because honestly it can be hard to leave books at home when you now you’ll be away from them for a while (ok we have to resist using #thestruggleisreal here…must resist…ok we obviously can’t because the struggle really is real).

Now we’re going to discuss Zoe’s ‘MY FICTIONAL BOYFRIENDS TAG’ video, which was uploaded on May 28th, 2015. Now we know we’re all fangirls/fanboys at heart, and because of this we honestly have a very deep emotional connection to our favorite book characters (and because of this so many ships are constantly set loose on the world). This is a really fun video that you will definitely have on replay, and a entertaining tag that you can play by yourself or with friends. The final video that we’re going to talk about is Zoe’s ‘BOOKS I WANT TO BE ADAPTED’ video, which was uploaded on December 30th, 2015 (you can check out the video below). If you love books (and you obviously really do if you’re still reading this post), then you know that you have a list of books that you think deserve a TV and/or film adaption. With the trend of so many of our fav books already getting adaptions, it is very likely that your favorite novel could get a small or big screen adaption some day. I highly recommend this video because Zoe gives a very interesting list that’s full of variety, so you’ll definitely find something you like on this list.

YouTube Wednesday: Danielle Marie…beauty, fashion, health…the guru with all the answers

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’, we are going to discuss a beauty/fashion/health guru/blogger/and vlogger, who is about to take the internet by storm. At the tender age of 15, this young budding internet sensation has: 46,336 subscribers (2,235,296 views) on YouTube, 4,724 Twitter followers, and 20,000 followers on Instagram. With such an impressive internet presence, I’m sure y’all are all already familiar with her, but if not, please allow me the pleasure of introducing you to Danielle Marie (people of the internet, you may now clap!). If you haven’t already heard of Danielle Marie (or even if you love her), please read on!

Danielle was born on September 25th, 1998 in Florida. She uploaded her first YouTube video (that is currently available on her channel) on April 29th, 2011. The video featured Danielle’s younger brother Freddie, who smelled different perfume/body spray scents, and gave his opinion ( check out the video hereàA Guy’s Opinion on Your Scent). The video was really funny and it was cool to see the close relationship between Danielle and Freddie. I thought that this was an excellent introduction video to Danielle’s channel, because it showed how natural, and charismatic she is in front of a camera. The next video on Danielle’s channel that we are going to discuss is her hair straightening tutorial video. The video entitled ‘How To: Sleek Straight Hair’ (please click here for the videoàHow To: Sleek Straight Hair), was very well done, and definitely showed how skillful Danielle is with hairstyling. Now even thought you may think that you know how to straighten you hair, trust me…you DON’T. Not only does Danielle show you how to properly straighten you hair, but she also shows you how to use the flat iron to make your hair look more blown back (it looks AMAZING!). So I would HIGHLY recommend this tutorial for all of you beauty hair lovers out there. Next up, we are going to talk about Danielle’s ‘Brace Face’ video (located right hereàBRACE FACE – YouTube), I really loved this video because it truly showed how confident Danielle is, and how close she is to her fans. I absolutely love it when YouTubers allow their fans to get to know them on a personal level, because it makes a viewer feel as if they are actually close friends with their favorite web star (honestly, I have so many YouTubers who are my BFFs but they just don’t know it yet…oh you know you have a YouTube BFF in your head, but that person has no clue you’re besties yet…exactly, that’s why you are my people. Internet high five!

Another video that Danielle did that I absolutely love is her ‘Favorite Summer Read’ (click here! Click here! à☼ Favorite Summer Reads!! ☼) video . Personally I’m a HUGE book nerd so I loved discovering new books through her video. Don’t worry if you’re not a huge reader, because these books are not like the ones you have to read in school. The books Danielle recommended are about romance, friendship, and the adventures that come along with summer. I’ve read some of the books from one of the authors that she mentioned (I haven’t read the book that was mentioned in the video, but it sounds really interesting), so if you are bored this summer, or want to go on an adventure from the comfort of your home, then definitely check out these books! Next up is Danielle’s ‘NYC/IMATS 2014’ (which stands for the International Makeup Artists Trade Show) haul. In this video, Danielle talked about the items that she purchased at IMATS, and various other stores in NYC. If you’re a fan of hauls (just for the record I LOVE hauls…just so y’all know), you should DEFINTELAY check out this one. Because c’mon, what’s better than cool fashion, and learning about products you never knew existed? Answer. There is nothing better. So click hereàNYC/IMATS HAUL 2014 – Clothes, Makeup, More!! – YouTube and prepare to want to spend all of your money on every item! (your wallet might be sad, but you’re closet and makeup bag will be SO happy with you. The last video we are going to discuss is Danielle’s ‘EASY Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle! Food, Staying Fit and Stress Free’ video (video hereàEASY Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle! – Food, Staying Fit & Stress Free) . In this video, she discusses various healthy snacks that you can try (and even a service that sends you a box of healthy snacks to try), how to mentally relax and clear your mind, and some fun ways to stay in shape. I really loved all of Danielle’s suggestions, because they were affordable for just about any budget, and flexible enough to fit in the busiest schedule. When I’m busy I often don’t “find” time to eat right and/or exercise like I should, but I think Danielle made some excellent suggestions that I will definitely be trying. All in all, I really love how diverse Danielle’s videos are, how much fun she is to watch, and how she speaks and engages her audience in a way that makes us feel as if we all know her. I also suggest that you all check out Danielle’s vlogs and blog 9which discuss the same types of topics that you find on her YouTube channel).

So now I know you want to go subscribe to Danielle, right? Yeah I thought so. I definitely suggest that everyone check out Danielle’s videos, because once you do, I promise that you will not be able to leave her page. Equipped with a fun, bubbly personality, interesting video topics, and a vast knowledge of all things beauty, fashion, and health related, it’s quite obvious that Danielle is on the path to becoming a HUGE name in fashion and beauty. Make sure you subscribe, and follow all of her social media accounts, so you don’t miss a single second of this young guru’s rise to fame.
