YouTube Wednesday: Get a nostalgia kick with this 20th anniversary Pokémon trailer

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTubeimage Wednesday’ we’re going to talk about a franchise that has been around for the past 20 years (yeah that’s a long time). Whether you were around from the beginning, or are a new fan, I think we can all agree that Pokémon has earned a unique place in pop culture history. So in celebration of the franchise’s 20th birthday (yay!) we’re going to take a look at the Super Bowl commercial that was recently uploaded to YouTube to celebrate the franchise’s anniversary. Also, Nintendo has announced that they will release the original Pokémon Blue, Red, and Yellow games on the ‘Nintendo 3DS store’, and Blue and Red will be preinstalled in special edition 3DS bundles packs that will also have Red and Blue themed faceplates. So get ready Pokélovers, because 2016 will definitely be your year! Also, if you love Pokémon then please check out my interview with Eric Stuart who was the original voice of the characters Brock and James on Pokémon (Eric Stuart Interview). Now let’s talk about the commercial. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

I really love this commercial because it isn’t an advertisement for a new game/merchandise, or even a small clip show of all of the many seasons of the show. The commercial shows various kids/teens/adults from all over the world engaging in Pokémon related activities. I think that this was a really cool idea, because it shows that Pokémon has many different aspects that we can all enjoy together, regardless of our gender, age, economic status, culture, or geographical location. It’s really amazing to see how this franchise has changed and grown over time, and I know that we’re all excited to see where it goes from here (check out the commercial below, you’ll love it!!!).

Monday Memos: Be like Bill…the meme that kicked off 2016

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to talk about the meme that has the internet in a craze, ‘Be Like Bill’Be like bill meme blog post. If you’ve been on Facebook this month then you’ve probably used this meme to generate your own hilarious story. However if for some strange reason you haven’t heard of this meme, I would definitely check it out. All you have to do is write you name and select your gender and the meme automatically gives you a funny short story about yourself (and if you don’t like the story you get then you can always click try again and well, try again until you get the perfect story for you). Also for fun this is the story I got, and yes it’s true, good job Bill! So now let’s talk about why memes like ‘Be Like Bill’ become so popular in the first place. Ready Ok, let’s go!!!

So why do we love memes and other viral internet trends so much? I’m sure that there are scientific and/or cultural reasons as to why this happens, but I think that the answer can be summed up two words: enjoyment and involvement. Of course we like watching or participating in anything that’s fun, but internet culture is built on involvement. Whether you tweet your fav celebrity, join a fandom, make a YouTube video, or even write a blog, we all like sharing the things we like (and occasionally the things we don’t like) with people who feel similar. So whether you want to be like Bill or can’t stand him, we all have to admit that everyone likes to be apart of a movement, and as long as we feel this way, there will be many more viral memes to come.

Monday Memos: The steering wheel that will change the way you drive forever

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to talk about a new invention that I’m sure smart wheelyou’ve all heard of by now. In 2013 T.J. Evarts, his sisters, and his friends (aka possibly the smartest group of teens on the planet) premiered their invention the ‘SMARTwheel’ on ABC’s show ‘Shark Tank’ and thus introduced us to the future of safe driving. In 2010 T.J. (then 14 years old) decided to try to find a solution to the texting and driving problems that kids (and really everybody) faces. Over the next 6 years T.J. and his group would develop a product that will not only save lives, but will change the way we drive. There have only been a few people who you can say have truly changed an industry and I think that it’s safe to say that T.J. and his group will soon join this exclusive group. So now that you know a little bit about the history of the ‘SMARTwheel’ I’m sure you’re wondering what this product actually does right? Well keep reading to find out! Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The ‘SMARTwheel’ has a sensor that produces a buzzing sound and flashing lights when you take both or one of your hands off of the wheel. When you put your hands back on the proper position then the flashing lights and buzzing sound stops. The ‘SMARTwheel’ also has sensors that allow you answer your phone (through the use of a Bluetooth headset), and adjust your windshield wiper speed without taking your hands off of the wheel. Also, when you purchase the wheel, you can get a free app that records how often you take your hands off of the wheel, forms charts & graphs to track how your driving habits change over time, and gives you a grade based off of your progression. The wheel is scheduled to go on sale on smartwheelusa.com in the next few months, and will be priced at $199 (but besides the fact that this product could save your life, you can also get free mp3 songs and gas cards if you buy this product and keep your hands on the wheel). With everyone from MIT, President Obama, and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood endorsing this product, it definitely seems like something worth checking out.

YouTube Wednesday: YouTube Red…YouTube steps into the subscription game

Hello people of the internet!!! We talk about so many amazing YouTubers that are all incredible and unique in their own way. There is youtube redone thing that all of these YouTubers have in common, if you like the channel, then you subscribe to it so you don’t miss a thing. Well what if you could subscribe to YouTube? Yup you heard me right! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we are going to talk about YouTube’s recent announcement that they will begin their 1st subscription service on October 28th. This is definitely a very new move for the website, so keep reading to see how this could affect you. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

Ok now that I’ve officially freaked you out, let’s break down the details of this news. At an event in Los Angeles earlier today, YouTube released it’s new subscriptions service called ‘YouTube Red’, which allows subscribers to pay $9.99 a month in exchange for some really cool benefits. These benefits include: the ability to watch unlimited YouTube videos completely ad free, the ability to save videos to watch offline when you don’t have a connection to the internet, the ability to continue watching videos while running other apps, unlimited streaming of Google Play Music, and exclusive content from top YouTube creators that you won’t have access to without this subscription. YouTube has said that you will be able to watch a lot of the same content for free, but you won’t have access to any of the bonuses listed above. Needless to say this is a BIG step for a website that is now a huge part of our everyday lives. So what do y’all think of this change? Will you subscribe to ‘YouTube Red’? One thing is for sure, starting October 28th, the way we watch YouTube will be changed forever. Let me know below what you think, and check out this video from theverge.com that explains all of the new changes in greater detail.

Monday Memos: The new jeans your iPhone needs

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to talk about some new jeans that iPhonephone charging jeans owners are going to love. These jeans come equipped with super cool technology that allows you to charge your phone with special cords connected to the jeans. Since our phones are basically the center of our worlds (I mean how else would we watch YouTube or Netflix, or go on social media…wow makes you wonder what people did before smart phones? Scary isn’t it?). So now let’s talk a little bit about the technology that is about to change our lives (but remember to read any and all safety instructions included with these jeans so you can stay safe). Ready? Ok, lets go!!!

A company called Joe’s Jeans have developed jeans called the #Hello jeans, that have “a patent pending pocket that perfectly holds your iPhone so you can charge your phone on-the-go,”. So basically this means that there is a small (but deep) pocket that perfectly holds the iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, and 6, and charges them through a small cord found on the waistband of the jeans, and a batter back that you can detach when you need to wash the jeans. The battery can charge an iPhone 5/5s/5c up to 80-85% and an iPhone 6 up to 70%, but the jeans are $189 plus $49 extra for the battery. Even thought this is pricey, you do get the convenience of never missing the perfect selfie opportunity so I guess we better add these jeans to our Christmas lists. These jeans definitely make you wonder what technology will bring us next. Check out the video below to see how the jeans work.

Monday Memos: 2015 Teen Choice Awards Predictions

2015 teen choice awards

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss our predictions for who will win at the Teen Choice Awards this year. I picked 6 categories and chose who will most likely win based off of how well this particular person/movie/act did this past year. Even though the competition is really stiff I think that we have 6 winners here, but if y’all disagree, please let me know in the comments below. So now let’s get to the fun part! Are y’all ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

  • Choice Movie: Action
    The Divergent Series: Insurgent

Now y’all all know that we were all patiently waiting for Insurgent to come out, and when it did, we were not disappointed. The movie made 295.2 million at the Box Office, and stars SO MANY of our favorite actors (and some up and comers that we’re all excited about), honestly how could this movie not win!?!

  • Choice Music: Male Artist
    Sam Smith

I mean do we even need to discuss this one? This year Sam Smith has won 4 Grammys (including Best New Artist), British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards, 3 awards at The Billboard Music Awards, and Best New Artist at the BET Awards. So needless to say, we’re loving Sam Smith right now.

  • Choice Music: Female Artist
    Taylor Swift

We can all agree that we’re still singing along to 1989 (which went #1 in sooo many countries I can’t even name them all here). Honestly, Taylor Swift is one of the most powerful acts in pop music at the moment, so it only makes sense that she wins this award, because she’s Taylor Swift and she’s awesome.

  • Choice Summer Song:
‘Bad Blood’ Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar

This song is one that we hear on the radio ALL the time at the moment, and we still love it. This single was so big, that the music video for the song opened up the 2015 Billboard Music Awards (which you can check my recap of here: 2015 Billboard Music Awards Recap). So needless to say, it wouldn’t surprise me if this song won.

  • Choice TV: Drama Show
    Empire

Honestly from the moment this show came out, we were hooked. The show has drama, music, interesting characters, complex storylines, and way too much awesomeness for us to even begin to discuss. Even though this is an EXTREMELY tough category ( I mean you have Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, and others competing), I think that Empire will take this one home.

  • Choice TV: Reality Show
    Dance Moms

Whether you love this show (or love to hate watch it), EVERYONE knows about Dance Moms. Dance Moms has already won this year at the Kid’s Choice Awards for Favorite Reality Show, and with the growing popularity of all of the girls, their moms, and of course Abby, it’s VERY likely that they’ll take home a surfboard this year.

YouTube Wednesday: ToThe9s…the YouTube duo that your subscription box has been waiting for

ToThe9sHello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to discuss an amazing beauty/fashion guru duo that will entertain you and give you awesome advice. If you haven’t heard of the channel ‘ToThe9s’ then you NEED to do that right now (well finish reading this blog post then hop on over there). ToThe9s was created by Vancouver college students Cassie and Ricci, who both are naturals in front of the camera. This duo’s diverse range of beauty/fashion/& DIY videos will have you instantly hooked and constantly checking your subscription box for new videos. So now…let’s get to the videos. Ready? Ok, let’s go!

The first video that we’re going to talk about is ToThe9s’ ‘DIY iPhone/Android cases’ video, which was uploaded on November 19th, 2013 (you can check out this video below). This video shows you that with a little work, you can have as many cool and unique cases as the internet can produce. The video is very detailed so you’ll know exactly what to do, and one of the girls even tells a quick story about how she use to sell these types of cases for kids at her school (which is a great idea to earn a little money for the summer btw). Next up we have ToThe9s’  ‘DIY Ripped Knee Jeans’ video, which was uploaded on April 19, 2014. This is a really cool video because it shows how you can easily transform any jeans into ripped jeans. The video is easy to follow, and help you create your jeans in just a few minutes. You gotta love a DIY video that helps you always stay in style.

Ok, let’s moved on to the ‘BACK TO SCHOOL LOOKBOOK: College Edition’ video, which was uploaded on September 15th, 2014. Even though it’s summer right now, eventually we all have to go to back to school so this is an excellent aid if you’re nervous about starting college or just school in general. The videos shows a lot of really cool looks that you can easily adapt to fit your individual style. This is the perfect way to start school in a fashionable way (before mid terms hit and you live in sweat pants…it happens just wait and see). The final video that we’re going to discuss is ToThe9s’ ‘Simple Summer Outfits’ video, which was uploaded on June 11th, 2015 (you can check out this video below). What I really love about this video is that all of the outfits have a very minimalistic feel, which is perfect if you want to look effortless cool. These looks are also a great way to shake up your summer style so you can grab those extra likes on Instagram (#instafamous !).

Keep up with everything ToThe9s is up to:

Monday Memos: The Netflix shift…how the popular website is changing the film/television industry

Hello people of the Internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss one of our biggest addictions. Canmm degrassi fuller house moving to netflix you guess what it is? No, not Starbucks. Nope, not YouTube. Give up? Well if you read title of this blog post then you know that we’re talking about Netflix!!! Yup we spend the majority of our free time binge watching the shows and movies on this steaming service, and because of this Netflix has become a HUGE part of pop culture. With the recent announcement of Degrassi moving to Netflix (YESSSSSS!!!!), I thought that this would be a good time to talk about how Netflix and other streaming services are changing the television industry, and how we consume our fav shows and movies. Ready? Ok let’s go!

Let’s start off with the reason why we’re talking about this…Degrassi moving to Netflix. Now if y’all haven’t heard of Degrassi, it is a Canadian teen drama that has entertained us since ‘The Kids of Degrassi Street’ after school specials aired in 1979. The franchise continued until 1992 with other branches of the franchise, and was picked up again in 2001. So as you can see this series has always had a home on television, but earlier this month, the Internet gave us a heart attack when it was announced that Degrassi would be ending (I think this was only in the U.S. but I mean that still made it terrifying for us fans here). About a week ago we found out that Degrassi would be picked up by Netflix (that was a close one but “whatever it takes you know [we] can make it through”…check out the theme song below if you don’t get this joke). With this announcement, Degrassi will join successful Netflix original programming, as well as the ‘Full House’ spin-off ‘Fuller House’ (which we already talked about and you can check out here (6 things we want to see in Fuller House ).

So why are shows like this that were once super successful on television moving to an online service? Well, I think YouTube has proved over the past few years that the way we consume our media keeps changing. Although TV and online services both have their positive and negative aspects, the trend definitely seems to be moving more towards online exclusive content (I mean you’re reading this article online verses in a newspaper or something). As time goes on we’ll definitely continue to see the film/TV/and music industry continue to integrate with what’s hot online. It’s interesting to see how online vs TV programming differs, and it will be exciting to see where this goes and how it changes pop culture. So for now I guess we’ll make sure our Netflix subscriptions are up to date, and check our old episodes of Degrassi online (trust me do it RIGHT NOW…that show will change your life!).

Monday Memos: Tampon Run…the new game that’s helping break down social stigmas one tampon at a time

Hello people of the Internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to talk about a game that you ALL have to check out (if you’re not already addicted to it). If you haven’t heard of the game ‘Tampon Run’, then please read on (trust me you’ll want to). Now although the game is a lot of fun, I really loved the story behind the game and just had to share it with y’all. Ready? Ok, let’s go?

Now first I’ll give y’all a quick overview of the game so you can see why this is a game you want to be addicted to. ‘Tampon Run’ is about a girl (you) who runs and shoots guys with….yup you guessed it tampons. What makes this game so great is the actual premise of the game, which consists of the player having to jump over “energy” guys running towards you while simultaneously shooting other guys. As the game comes on, the speed of your “enemies” increases, which makes the game harder and harder. Sounds fun right!?!

tampon run

The story behind this game is really cool because this highly addicting, fun (and free btw) game was created by two high school girls. ‘Tampon Run’ was developed by Sophie Houser and Andrea Gonzales at a New York ‘Girls Who Code’ camp, where the two girls met, developed their coding skills, and eventually kept in touch and developed the game together. Sophie and Andrea have said that they created the game because, “it’s [strange] that our society has accepted and normalized guns and violence through video games, yet we still find tampons and menstruation unspeakable” (#truthtalk). The game has been very well received, which has resulted in Sophie and Andrea to be written about in ‘Time’, ‘Teen Vogue’ and other publications worldwide. If you think “well this is awesome, but I can’t do something like that”, then rethink this, because Sophie has said that she hadn’t even heard of coding before this camp, and now she’s going to Brown and plans to major in computer science. Also, Andrea has gotten an internship with DoSomthing.org. I think it’s really cool that these girls are trying to break the stigma associated with something that so much of the population goes through. Who knows maybe one day it will be normal to talk openly about everything without feeling embarrassed, and certain careers won’t be defined by gender, only passion and talent. Let me know in the comments what y’all think about all this piece of the Internet (here’s a video of Sophia and Andrea speaking about the creation of Tampon Run, and what has happened since they’ve launched the game).
