Hello people of the internet!!! Since this is the last ‘Monday Memos’ blog of 2014, I thought that it would be cool to talk about who will be the next big breakout music artist of 2015. Last year I predicted that 2014 would be a HUGE year for Ariana Grande, and well y’all saw what happened (if you want to check out that blog post then here’s the link Artist Spotlight: Ariana Grande). This year I think that Shawn Mendes will rule the charts. If you’re not already obsessed with him, then read on to learn exactly why this singer/songwriter only needs 6 seconds to win you over.
Shawn Mendes is a 16 year old Canadian musician. He first gained popularity by posting 6 second covers on Vine in 2013. He quickly received millions of views and followers in just a few months. In January of 2014, manager Andrew Gertler discovered Shawn and brought him to the attention of Island Records, where he eventually signed a record deal with. In early 2014 (before he was signed) he toured as a member of the ‘MagCon Tour’, which also featured numerous other social media stars. In June of 2014, he released his first single ‘Life of the Party’. The single ended up making Shawn the youngest artist to debut in the Top 25 with a debut song on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’. He also opened Austin Mahone’s nationwide tour, (called ‘Live on Tour’) as an opening act and released his debut major label EP ‘The Shawn Mendes EP’ in July of that year. 2014 continued to be a big year for Shawn due to his win as ‘Choice Webstar: Music’ at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards. As you can see, 2014 was an insanely awesome year for this rising artist. With an upcoming opening slot on Taylor Swift’s ‘1985’ tour, and the release of his debut full length album (sometime next year), 2015 is only going to be more insane for Shawn. So if you want to become a fangirl/fanboy now, please read on.
Next up we’re going to get to the part that y’all have been waiting for, yup, we’re gonna talk about the music! So let’s kick things off with Shawn’s debut single ‘Life if the Party’. This sweet ballad is about Shawn telling a girl not to be afraid to be herself. It’s a cute story about how we should all be comfortable in our skin because life is too short to be afraid. I thought that this was a really cool debut song for him because it’s catchy, and has a good message. Definitely a song you’ll want to add to your winter playlists. Next up we’re gonna talk about Shawn’s newest song ‘Something Big’, which was released in November of 2014. This song is a fun, upbeat song that is about the feeling you get right before something big in your life is about to happen. In this song we got to see a little of Shawn’s rapping skills (as if he wasn’t amazing enough), and you also get to see his different layers as an artist. Although I love his ballads, it’s cool to hear him have fun with a track, and it makes you wonder how exciting this song must sound live. The last song that we’re going to talk about is called ‘The Weight’. This track is a breakup song that tells the story of someone pretending that they’re ok without the person they love, but not actually being ok with the breakup. This is a really good song to cry to, and I found that the lyrics were really unique and insightful. This song also shows that Shawn has the emotional range that an artist needs to sing this kind of song (which shows how rounded of an artist he already is). These songs all leave you excited to see what he comes out with next, and just how much he will grow as an artist in the future.
Keep up to date with everything Shawn is doing:

Hello people of the Internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss a young artist who is definitely on the rise. This talented young girl has already stolen our hearts with her infectious Pop/Rap songs, that have shattered records by becoming the youngest Covergirl spokesperson. Although 2014 was an AWESOME year for her, I predict that 2015 will only be bigger for her. Now if you haven’t already figured it out, I’m talking about singer/songwriter/rapper/dancer/actress/and all around cool girl Becky G (wow is there anything she can’t do!?! And she’s only 17…say it with me everyone…WOW!!!).
Ok we are now moving on to the biography part of this post, but I’ll give you y’all the shorten version, because we have Wikipedia for the rest. Ok! Becky G was born on March 2nd, 1997 in California. Becky has stated in interviews that she didn’t have the easiest time growing up, due to financial problems that her family went through when she was 9. Because of the family’s financial struggles, they were forced to move into Becky’s grandparent’s converted garage in Inglewood, California. Becky has said that even at such a young age, she felt that she should try to help her parents earn money to support the family. So, she made a deal with her parents and asked them to give her 6 months to try to break into the entertainment industry, at the end of the 6 months, she would forget about it if she didn’t get any work. Luckily, Becky’s natural talent allowed her to make a lasting impression on casting directors, and began doing voice-over and commercial work. She also started recording herself using Garageband (a computer program that let’s you record audio) to try showcase her singing abilities. Becky continued to gain exposure by performing in two girl bands: G.L.A.M (which was produced By Multi Platinum Producer Andrew Lane, who has worked with artists such as: the Backstreet Boys, Lisa ‘Left Eye’. Lopes, among others, and on soundtracks for: High School Musical, Hannah Montana, and many more), and B.C.G. In 2011, Becky began uploading videos of remixed versions of popular pop and hip-hop songs on videos onto YouTube (she would write her own rap lyrics, and add them to the songs in order to show how advanced her sense of artistry was). She later released the songs on a mix tape called ‘@itsbeckygomez‘. Although all of her songs were loved by fans, it was her cover of Kanye West and Jay-Z’s song ‘Otis’, that caught the attention of industry legend Dr. Luke. He was so impressed, that he signed Becky to his label Kemosabe Records (which is apart of Sony Music Entertainment).
Becky broke into the mainstream music scene on June 12, 2012, when she was featured on pop singer/fellow YouTube sensation Cody Simpson’s single ‘ Wish U Were Here’. Becky’s career continued to heat up, with the release of her songs: ‘Turn the Music Up’, ‘Oath’ (which was technically released by Cher Lloyd, but Becky is featured and co-wrote the song), and ‘Problem’ featuring Will.i.am. Becky returned to what initially got her noticed by remixing ‘Die Young'( which was originally made popular by Ke$ha) the track also features Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa, and ‘Jenny from the Block’ (which was made popular by Jennifer Lopez, and renamed ‘Becky from the Block’). In 2013, Gomez released her EP ‘Play It Again‘, which features 4 new tracks. On April 23, 2014, she released her new song ‘Shower’, which is the first single off of her debut album. ‘Shower’ became one of Becky G’s biggest hits to date, and she performed it on numerous shows such as the 2014 Teen Choice Awards. Due to all of her success, Becky was asked to open on Katy Perry, Jason Derulo, and Demi Lovato’s upcoming tours.
With the ability to sing, rap, dance, and completely take control of a crowd in any venue, it is easy to predict that Becky will have a VERY long career. At a young age, Becky has been able to figure out how to build a fiercely loyal fan base, and is already a well-loved artist in both the English and Spanish music markets. Becky has also become a fashion and beauty icon for her fans, proving that she truly is a well-rounded entertainer. I am so excited to see where her career takes her, and I know that she will not only build a legacy as a phenomenal entertainer, but will also blaze a trail for young artists who follow her. Give it up for your queen Beasters!!!

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we are going to discuss Seventeen Magazine’s newest issue. What makes this particular month so special? Because it’s the magazine’s first ‘YouTube Edition’!!! Yes, our favorite YouTubers are coming off screen to take center stage in one of the most popular magazines among pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults. I feel that this is an extremely smart move for Seventeen Magazine to take, because their audience is the same as the audience that the YouTubers featured in the magazine have. I definitely see other popular magazines following this lead, which means that we will get to see a lot more of our fav YouTube stars on our fav magazines (yay)! Now, I promise that I will try not to ruin the magazine by giving away to many details, for any of you who haven’t bought/read it in the store yet (no of course we don’t do that…why would we…moving on). Ok, let’s dive in!
First off, let’s discuss some of our fav stars that are included in the magazine. I was really excited to see that Shane Dawson did an advice segment in the magazine, because honestly you know that his advice is going to be blunt, helpful, and VERY hilarious. I think that he was the perfect choice for this column, because he has always given serious (and not so serious) advice on his channel. There were also segments that included Joey Graceffa, Tyler Oakley, Zoella, Marcus Butler, and MANY more. I also liked that the magazine features up and coming YouTubers who are ones to watch out for (and they may also appear on the blog, so stay tuned!). Although a lot of really great YouTubers were featured in the magazine, we have to spend some time talking about the cover star, Bethany Mota (you can find a blog post about her here YouTube Wednesday: Bethany Mota, the beauty guru who proved that positivity is always in style | celindareyesblog). In the interview that Seventeen did with Bethany covered topics such as: what it’s like to grow up on YouTube, how she’s dealt with bullying, the importance of finding and pursuing something that you love, and how to succeed in anything you do (I mean obviously Bethany is winning at life, so I am definitely taking her advice).
I don’t know about you, but I will definitely be rereading this edition of Seventeen over and over again (I’ve already taken a look at it, and it is AMAZING… just in case you didn’t know). With the partnership of popular YouTube channels with major TV Networks: AwesomnessTV, and TheFineBros ( who both partnered with Nickelodeon), Epic Meal Time (who partnered with FYI, which is a new TV channel related to A&E), and all of the YouTube/other internet themed categories that were included in this year’s broadcast of the Teen Choice Awards this has been a BIG year for YouTube, and the internet in general (even though some YouTube categories have been included before, I think that this is the first year that any winners were announced on-air…btw you can find a recap of the show here Monday Memos: 2014 Teen Choice Awards Recap!!! | celindareyesblog). Other YouTubers such as Tyler Oakley and iJustine have also done hosting, and correspondence work for numerous entertainment news shows. Additionally, popular YouTubers Shane Dawson, Zoella, and PointlessBlog have/are releasing books, and Shane Dawson also runs a popular podcast, and is in the process of releasing a movie and a TV show in the future. Also, ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ author John Green (you can find a review of the book & movie here: Monday Memos: The Fault In Our Stars…a star crossed love story with no faults | celindareyesblog) also initially gained fame as a popular YouTuber and one of the founders of VidCon (a popular YouTube convention where fans can meet their favorite online stars). Honestly the list goes on and on, but in short…the internet and its’ stars are quickly taking over the entertainment business that extends offline. I am really excited to see how the entertainment industry will change, as a new generation of stars are continued to be ushered in.
