Monday Memos: Lena Strickling…the girl who used her 1 wish to help others

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss 18 year Lena Strickling, who Lena Strickling's - Make A Wishrecently had a very important interview with the YouTube channel ‘Collectively’ that you NEED to watch. Now before you click away, Lena isn’t a celebrity, model, or internet star. She’s a cancer survivor who recently used her wish from the ‘Make-A-Wish Foundation’, to raise awaness about a topic that A LOT of people face (and no it’s not cancer). I thought that this was such an amazing thing to do (because seriously how many of us would be completely selfish with our wish…exactly basically all of us would). Please read on, because this is a story that we ALL need to hear. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

Lena is a recent survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma (she has been cancer free since April), and although she’s had to endure 15 rounds of chemotherapy, and is currently going through menopause at the tender age of 18, she used this article to discuss another issue that plagues way too many people. Lena is not only a cancer survivor, but also a survivor of sexual assault. Lena said that she was sexually assaulted by her father for as long as she can remember, and it became a everyday by the time she was 6 years old. She said that he would even assault in her public by putting a blanket over her so no one else could see. Lena eventually told a friend what was going on after she took a DARE class at the age of 10, and learned why what was happening to her was wrong, and what it was called. Lena later told her mom through a letter, and her mother called the police who convicted Lena’s father and sentenced him to prison ( where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia with religious delusions). One of the things that I found most heartbreaking about this interview is when Lena says that “Cancer never bothered me at all, versus with sexual abuse it’s like that happened and it’s still haunting me.” (check out Lena’s interview below

Unfortunately Lena isn’t alone, because according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), one in five women will be sexually assaulted and 44% of sexual assault and rape victims are under 18. Lena said she wanted to tell her story, so she could help other people suffering from sexual assault, and also to explain why she feels it’s so important to educate kids about sexual consent from a young age. Lena has said that talking about her past has helped her to begin to move on. Lena did have  some words of encouragement for sexual abuse victims that I wanted to share with y’all, “everybody has a right to talk about [how] they feel,” “Be proud of yourself, and stand up for yourself and don’t change your story and don’t back down because people don’t believe you. Just keep going. Don’t let anybody knock you down.” It’s just so amazing that someone who has been through so much would use their 1 wish to try to help others, so they don’t have to endure what she did. Truly inspirational!

Monday Memos: 2015 Teen Choice Awards Predictions

2015 teen choice awards

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss our predictions for who will win at the Teen Choice Awards this year. I picked 6 categories and chose who will most likely win based off of how well this particular person/movie/act did this past year. Even though the competition is really stiff I think that we have 6 winners here, but if y’all disagree, please let me know in the comments below. So now let’s get to the fun part! Are y’all ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

  • Choice Movie: Action
    The Divergent Series: Insurgent

Now y’all all know that we were all patiently waiting for Insurgent to come out, and when it did, we were not disappointed. The movie made 295.2 million at the Box Office, and stars SO MANY of our favorite actors (and some up and comers that we’re all excited about), honestly how could this movie not win!?!

  • Choice Music: Male Artist
    Sam Smith

I mean do we even need to discuss this one? This year Sam Smith has won 4 Grammys (including Best New Artist), British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards, 3 awards at The Billboard Music Awards, and Best New Artist at the BET Awards. So needless to say, we’re loving Sam Smith right now.

  • Choice Music: Female Artist
    Taylor Swift

We can all agree that we’re still singing along to 1989 (which went #1 in sooo many countries I can’t even name them all here). Honestly, Taylor Swift is one of the most powerful acts in pop music at the moment, so it only makes sense that she wins this award, because she’s Taylor Swift and she’s awesome.

  • Choice Summer Song:
‘Bad Blood’ Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar

This song is one that we hear on the radio ALL the time at the moment, and we still love it. This single was so big, that the music video for the song opened up the 2015 Billboard Music Awards (which you can check my recap of here: 2015 Billboard Music Awards Recap). So needless to say, it wouldn’t surprise me if this song won.

  • Choice TV: Drama Show
    Empire

Honestly from the moment this show came out, we were hooked. The show has drama, music, interesting characters, complex storylines, and way too much awesomeness for us to even begin to discuss. Even though this is an EXTREMELY tough category ( I mean you have Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, and others competing), I think that Empire will take this one home.

  • Choice TV: Reality Show
    Dance Moms

Whether you love this show (or love to hate watch it), EVERYONE knows about Dance Moms. Dance Moms has already won this year at the Kid’s Choice Awards for Favorite Reality Show, and with the growing popularity of all of the girls, their moms, and of course Abby, it’s VERY likely that they’ll take home a surfboard this year.

Monday Memos: The 10 life lessons we learned from Harry Potter films

Hey people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’, we are going to discuss a movie franchise that is near and dear to all of our hearts. These movies were not only entertaining (COMPLETELY addicting), but taught us all numerous life lessons about friendship, love, family, and why dragons and giants are actually really cool friends to have (you know…just the typical life lessons everyone learns as they grow up). If you haven’t already guessed, we’re taking about the extremely successful ‘Harry Potter’ series. So if you waited by your mailbox for your Hogwarts acceptance letter (or if you’re still waiting…I know it’s coming, seriously it just got lost in the mail), then please read on and join me in discussing ‘The 10 Life Lessons We Learned from Harry Potter’.

10) Don’t wait 6 years to tell someone you have a crush on them (c’mon that’s too long…yes I’m looking at you Ron and Hermione).

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

9) It takes more than just blood to make a family (unless you’re the Weasleys and already have more family than you can handle).

harry and the weasleys

8) Don’t believe rumors (if Harry had he would have never been friends with the Weasleys or gotten close to Sirius Black).

harry and sirius

7) In life if you want something, go after it (Harry wanted to be in the ‘Gryffindor House’ so that’s where he was place. In other words Harry is a boss!).

harry and the sorting hat

6) Guys with beards can be very cool (I mean look at the facts…Dumbledore had a beard and he was cool, Hagrid had a beard and he was cool, Voldemort didn’t have a beard and thus was not cool).

voldemort anti

5)  If your friends risk their lives for you 6 years in a row, you can probably safely assume that you’ll be BFFs forever…or at least 5 more years.

harry and his friends

4) Love is the most important thing in life (I mean Dumbledore kept going on about it in just about every movie, and remember he has a beard which makes him cool, and thus trustworthy right? ).

funny dumbledore 2

3) Pick your friends very carefully (I mean what would’ve happened if Harry had chosen to be friends with Malfoy instead of Ron during their first year at Hogwarts…I know your mind was just blown wasn’t it).

harry and draco

2) Don’t take life to seriously (I mean look at Fred and George, didn’t they always seem like they were having the most fun!?!).

fred and george 2

1) Embrace what makes you “weird” (like the fact that you’re secretly a wizard who has to stay on the run from an evil wizard who’s trying to kill you even though you’re just a child…I mean that’s just an example).

harry potter vs voldemort

So you see, Harry Potter wasn’t just a film series that we all watched waaayyyy to much, it unraveled the many mysteries of life. So, the next time someone gives you a hard time for replaying the whole series 1 too many times, just say that you’re learning about life. And really isn’t learning about life the most important thing? I don’t know if that will work with your teachers/professors/employers but it’s worth a shot.

YouTube Wednesday: Macy Medford, an entertainer that you will soon be “Crazy ‘Bout”

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ I am going to introduce you to an AMAZING singer/songwriter whose voice will blow you away. I was introduced to this vocalist when she followed me on Twitter (thank you Twitter for being the medium in which I have found so many amazing artists…and this is why Twitter is my bff…ok moving on). This phenomenal teen singer has perfected the formula of complementing fun pop style beats and infectious melodies, with jazz vocalist elements, and thus creating a completely unique sound that is unforgettable and impossible to ignore. This young vocalist has already made large strides in her career, and is also an accomplished actress and dancer. Honestly, in my opinion she has the talented and drive to accomplish whatever goal she sets for herself (and she’s from Texas!!! Sorry but I have to support my fellow Texans). So without further ado, please allow me to introduce you to the soon to be iconic Macy Medford!

Macy Medford is a 16 year old actress/singer/songwriter/dancer who was born and raised in Katy, TX. She began performing at the tender age of 3 in a recital. This performance would ultimately be the catalyst that would spark Macy’s love of performing. She is also a well seasoned actress, and has performed in numerous stage plays such as: Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Annie, and others. Macy has also had the opportunity to appear in a national Disney Channel commercial. In 2011 Macy was nominated for Pop Artist of the Year at the LA Music Awards. Macy’s music has also been featured on the Hulu teen drama ‘East Los High’ (a show about Hispanic teens growing up in East Los Angeles). Macy has continue to grow a loyal fan base over the past few years, and currently has over 50,000 twitter followers. In 2013, Macy won the International Songwriting Competition for her track ‘Just Me and You’. In the same year, she also became a finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition (a competition that gives unsigned artists and bands the opportunity to compete for cash prizes, exposure, and mentoring from industry professionals).

Macy has shown through her YouTube videos that she is capable of adapting songs from numerous genres into her own unique style. For example, in 2012 Macy performed her rendition of ‘ Trouble with Love Is’ by fellow Texan Kelly Clarkson Kelly Clarkson – Trouble With Love covered by Macy Medford – YouTube (yay Texas!!!) I truly enjoyed Macy’s rendition of the hit due to the fact that she stated true to the original version, but added a few “Macy Qualities” which gave the song new life. Through the track Macy was able to show off her enviable range, as well as her vocal’s jazzy undertones. Macy once again adds her own flair to a popular song, with her cover of ‘Lego House’, Lego House- Acoustic Cover by Macy Medford originally by Ed Sheeran. In ‘Lego House’, Macy is able to convey her ability to bit only sing beautifully, but also demonstrates her exceptional vocal control. Throughout the song, Macy performs the song in a manner that is similar to the original, but also adds her own twist to the song (even adding an exceptionally cool riff towards the end of the song). Another cover where Macy is able to showcase the various dimensions of her voice is in her rendition of Emeli Sande hit song ‘My Kind of Love’ My Kind of Love by Emeli Sande- Acoustic Cover by Macy Medford. When I heard this rendition, I was truly floored, due to the fact that this is an exceptionally difficult track to perform, and Macy was able to make her cover unique and amazing. Although this song is very vocally challenging, Macy was able to handle the notes phenomenally well, and as always she added her own personal touches, to make her version unique. Hearing Macy’s voice on the track is very refreshing, due to the distinct differences between her voice, and Emile Sande’s voice. Although Macy has performed several covers, she has been able to prove through these videos that she is not only an amazing vocalists, who is years ahead of her age vocally, but is also a true artist who is able to give any song new life.

On February 20th, 2012 Macy released her debut album entitled “Crazy ‘Bout You”. After I listened to this 8 track album, I quickly determined that it is a MUST BUY album for all music lovers. The album gives off a very positive vibe, and all 8 tracks are so infectious and relatable, that you will soon find yourself listening to the album non-stop from beginning to end. Through this album, Macy also showed off her impressive songwriting chops (she co-wrote all 8 tracks!…definitely very impressive!). With spring and summer rapidly approaching, this album should definitely be on your road trip playlist, with fun tracks about the beginning stages of young love (Crazy ‘Bout You, Just Me and You, Scream Out Loud, and Free Fallin’), and inspirational songs about following your dreams and not letting others bring you down (Sideline and Stronger), this album will be your perfect spring/summer soundtrack. However, if you are nursing a broken heart and are just sick of love, Macy has you covered! Her track ‘Bye Bye’ is a sassy, upbeat song about how a certain person may have treated you badly, but you’re MUCH better without them (alright girl power!…or guy, because we know y’all go through broken hearts too…don’t worry though, we’ll keep that between us). Along with very well-written, catchy songs, Macy also puts her impressive vocals on display in this album. With a fun Jason Mraz meets jazz diva sound, and impressive runs thrown in every once in a while, Macy truly shows that she is an artist that does not have any boundaries or limitations.

I certainly think that Macy is on the fast track to being a global superstar. With an amazing stage presence (DEFINETELY check out some of her live performances on YouTube), well-developed songwriting skills, and vocals skills years ahead of her time, Macy has the total package. As if this wasn’t enough, it seems that Macy has also discovered what type of artist she wants to be at the tender age of 16. Macy’s vocals contain such a unique twist of modern pop and old school jazz, that I can see her music finding a home in the rotations of various radio stations. Also, due to the jazz elements in her voice, I believe that Macy will certainly standout from the crowd, making her an undeniable force in the music industry. I would suggest that EVERYONE check out Macy’s videos, buy her music, and become very familiar with this emerging artist, because Macy Medford is a name that will become inescapable in a few years.
