Monday Memos: ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ just gave you 1 more reason to watch Netflix

Thirteen Reasons WhyHello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to talk about a new show that we’re all going to want to check out on Netflix. If you have ever read the novel ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ by Jay Asher then prepared to get really excited! In 2011 Universal Pictures purchased the rights to make ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ into a film starring Selena Gomez. On October 29th (of 2015) it was announced that this book would instead be made into a 13 episode miniseries that will be executive produced by Selena Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey, and Kristel Laiblin (who has also served as a producer for films such as The Man with the Iron Fists, In Time, and Children of Men). I’m not 100% sure if Selena will still star as the lead character Hannah Baker, but I’m sure we’ll find out soon so I’m excited to find out. Personally I am a HUGE fan of this book, so I’m excited to see this miniseries. This is the latest book to get a film/TV release, following other Young Adult novels such as: Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Divergent Trilogy, The Fault in our Stars, and the TV show Eye Candy, among many others. It’s really cool to see our favorite stories get a breath of fresh air by coming to life on the big and small screen, and I’m really excited to see which of our favorite novels will be added to this list next. So now let’s discuss the plot a little bit (and don’t worry there won’t be any huge spoilers).

The story revolves around the aftermath of the suicide of a high school girl named Hannah Baker. We follow the story through the eyes of a shy guy named Clay Jensen who is surprised to find a box of 7 cassette tapes from an anonymous person. He listens to the tapes and finds out that Hannah is narrating the tapes. On these tapes she explains that there are 12 people & 13 reasons that are responsible for her committing suicide. She says that each of the 12 people must pass the tapes along to the next person, otherwise someone else will release a second set of the tapes to everyone at their school. This is definitely a really interesting story that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The book ends with giving the audience a lot of really good life lessons, but do so in a very realistic non-preachy way. I am so excited that this book is getting more attention, and I am interested to see where Netflix takes this story.

YouTube Wednesday: Angry Grandpa’s house prank

angry grandpa

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to talk about a recent YouTube video that we can’t stop watching. I know we often talk about how talented, funny, and creative YouTubers are, but sometimes we forget that they are regular people who just share their awesomeness with us. However, sometimes we get videos where our fav YouTubers discuss social issues with us, tell us about their fears/problems, and basically treat us like the BFFs that we all wish we were to them. If you love the popular YouTube channel ‘Angry Grandpa’ and/or videos that will make you cry then please keep reading. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

A few weeks ago the YouTuber ‘thekidwiththecamera’, who is the son and one of the masterminds behind ‘Angry Grandpa’, uploaded a “prank” video that will melt your heart. If you’ve never seen ‘Angry Grandpa’ before, it’s a YouTube channel where a man named Michael “Pickleboy” Green uploads his father (Charlie Green) reacting to current events, celebrities, and pranks that Pickleboy pulls on him. There are videos of Angry Grandpa pulling pranks on his son as well (disclaimer: The only video on this channel that I’ve seen is the one that I will post below, but some of the other videos do contain language that may be inappropriate/insulting to some people, so keep that in mind if you check them out). Anyway, in this video, Pickleboy, his girlfriend, and his father are looking at a house because Pickleboy has told his dad that he’s interested in buying it. The three go through the house, and after they get Angry Grandpa’s approval, Pickleboy tells him that he’s not buying the house for himself, he’s actually buying it for Angry Grandpa. The reaction to this is priceless and will definitely make you want to go and hug your loved ones (just round them all up in a big group hug…no it’s really not as weird as it sounds…moving on). Before this, Angry Grandpa lived in a trailer home, so that fact just breaks you heart even more (seriously I haven’t cried this much since I saw ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ and now YouTube has me crying again…anyways…). Personally I like seeing videos like this because it’s cool to see that there are so many good things in the world, check out the video below, but have some tissues on standby.

Monday Memos: 2015 MTV Movie Awards Recap

2015 mtv movie awardsHello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we are going to discuss the 2015 ‘MTV Movie Awards’. The show was hosted this year by comedian/actress Amy Schumer, who definitely made this year’s award show a memorable one. The show began with a hilarious series of skits which showed Amy as a character in some of the biggest movies of the year. These skits included the movies: ‘Pitch Perfect’, ‘Divergent’, ‘The Fault In Our Stars’, and ‘The Hunger Games’. There were a few more hilarious jokes about the shows on MTV, and the fact that MTV has TV shows now instead of just playing music videos all day. Amy also made some really funny jokes about actor/comedian Kevin Hart’s release of non-stop movies lately, and Hillary Clinton finally giving the announcement we’ve all been waiting for…she’s the newest member of One Direction (just kidding, but wouldn’t that be awesome?!?). So now that we’ve discussed the opening of the show, then let’s move on to the awards. Ready? Ok, let’s go!

Awards (I only choose a few awards to talk about because I didn’t want y’all to be here all day, so y’all can check out the complete list of winners here
MTV Movie Award Winners):

Best Action Hero (this award was announced before the show began):

Dylan O’Brien ‘The Maze Runner’
Now even though we don’t really need to explain why ‘The Maze Runner’ deserves this award (even though the competition was VERY stiff) but one reason would definitely be that the film grossed over $340 million worldwide, since its’ release in September of 2014 (not bad for a movie that had a budget of $34 million). With the success that this film would already have because of the success of the book series (which the movies are based off of), and Dylan’s popularity because if his role on Teen Wolf, there was never a doubt that this movie would do extremely well.

Best Female Performance:

Shailene Woodley ‘The Fault in Our Stars’

Ok we all know why Shailene won this one! I mean Hazel and Gus are still playing with our emotions, and wow that movie is such so amazing and intense. This was the first in a LONG line of awards Shailene would win last night, and honestly she definitely deserved this one.

Trailblazer Award:

Shailene Woodley

Honestly right now it’s a good time to be Shailene Woodley. In the past few years she’s been an action hero in the Divergent series, a teenager who’s world gets turned upside down when her mom “leaves” her and secrets start coming out, a love struck teenager battling cancer (thanks again John Green for giving us an ending we’ll never recover from), and so many other memorable characters. It’s obvious that this is just the beginning of Shailene Woodley’s Hollywood takeover, and I don’t know about y’all, but I am SOOOO excited to see what her next project will be.

Generation Award:

Robert Downey Jr.

I think we can all agree that Robert Downey Jr. has such an interesting story due to his tremendous film success in the 80s & early 90s, followed by his comeback in 2003. Most of us probably know him for his work in Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, The Avengers, and so much more! Now of course we also know about his past with drug and alcohol addiction, but I think that the fact that he was able to bounce back and become such a respected actor (because honestly that’s not an easy task to pull off), is a real testament to his talent.

Best Kiss:

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort ‘The Fault In Our Stars’

Ok honestly I think we would’ve all been mad if anyone else won this award because Gus and Hazel are #relationshipgoals, they just are. This couple made us laugh, cry, question our place in the universe, and learn a lot of really big words, so of course they would win best kiss. I mean they were just too cute, I just can’t y’all…you just gotta love Hazel and Gus.

Best Male Performance:

Bradley Cooper ‘American Sniper’

I think that it’s definitely so much harder for an actor when they have to portray a real person verses a fictional character, so Bradley Cooper certainly showed us his acting chops with this film. In American Sniper Bradley Cooper portrayed U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, and the fact that this film grossed over $540 million worldwide with a $58.8 million budget (which made it the highest-grossing film of 2014 in the United States), shows that audiences just fell in love with Bradley Cooper’s work in this movie. When this film came out EVERYONE wanted to see it, so I don’t think we were surprised that he walked away with this win.

Comedic Genius:

Kevin Hart

With movies like: ‘Think Like A Man’, ‘Ride Along’, ‘About Last Night’, his stand-up act (and honestly so much work that I would have y’all here all day), we are all very familiar with how funny Kevin Hart is. All amazing comics have their moments when they just rule comedy, and right now is definitely the era of Kevin Hart. So prepare because apparently “if he sees his shadow then we get 6 more months of Kevin Hart movies”, thanks for the tip Amy Schumer.

Movie of The Year:

‘The Fault In Our Stars’

Ok if Hazel and Gus are #relationshipgoals, then ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ is definitely #moviegoals, because this film is just so utterly perfect. I mean like I said before, this movie made us feel all of our emotions at once, and then made us question everything about life. I mean I read the book so I knew what was going to happen and this movie still made me cry at the end (I’m still not ready to talk about that ending y’all, it’s just too soon). I think that this movie is definitely the movie of the year, and now we just have to wait and see how John Green’s latest book turned film ‘Paper Towns’ does (I know, I know, we’re all super excited!).

YouTube Wednesday: 2015 The Year of YouTube

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to do something a little different. Usually we talk about rising beauty, fashion, and music stars, but I thought that today we talk about the website behind these rising stars. Over the past few years, YouTube has grown into a platform for previously unknown (yet very awesome) people to showcase their talents and personalities. I think that we’re all drawn to this website because you can literally find something that you love, no matter what your tastes might be. Whether you love music, fashion, comedy, rants, or very grumpy cats, there is something on YouTube for you. Even though many YouTube stars have found their way into mainstream media (T.V., movies, etc.,), I really think that YouTube will continue to grow, and that 2015 will really be the year that we see YouTube evolve into something truly unstoppable. It’s really cool that there is a platform like this, where you can always find something that you want to watch/listen to, and that you as the viewer truly has command over. Next, we’re going to talk a little bit about some our favorite YouTube stars that had big ACCOMPLISHMENTS in 2014, and how this has set the stage for an amazing 2015 in the world of YouTube and the internet in general. So…let’s get started!

Now we can talk about all of the amazing YouTubers that we love (because we’d be here for days), so we’ll talk about a few of the really big YouTube stars from various areas of the website. So let’s start things off with Jenna Marbles! Jenna has been able to use her funny, outgoing personality to reel us in, and make us all completely addicted to her videos (seriously, if you’re having a bad day, click on a Jenna Marbles’ video and you WILL feel better). With over 14 million subscribers and more than 1 billion total channel views, Jenna has one of the most successful channels on YouTube. Last year she expanded her resume into radio, by hosting a new show on the SiriusXM channel ‘Hits 1’. On the show, Jenna can be seen counting down the top 15 most listened to songs on YouTube each week. With a career that is definitely not slowing down, I can’t wait to see what’s next for her.

Another YouTuber that is a roller coaster that only goes up (a little ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ humor there…which is a book, and later a movie, that was also written by a YouTuber, you can check out my review of the movie here: Monday Memos: The Fault In Our Stars), is Bethany Mota. In 2014 Bethany competed on ‘Dancing With The Stars’, and continued her clothing line deal with Aéropostale (and released her 1st perfume and decor line with the company, you can learn all about Bethany by checking out this blog post I wrote about her here: YouTube Wednesday: Bethany Mota). As if this wasn’t enough awesomeness for 1 year, she also showed off her music skills by releasing her first single (she was also the cover girl for Seventeen Magazine’s 1st ever all YouTube edition, which you can read more about in my blog post on it here: YouTube Wednesday: Seventeen Magazine YouTube Edition). With such an awesome 2014, you can only imagine how much Bethany will accomplish in 2015. A musician that will have everyone talking this year is Noah Guntrie. This artist first made his impression on YouTube with the release of his epic jazzy cover of LMFAO’s ‘Sexy & I Know It’. Noah has also performed on numerous shows such as: The Ellen Degeneres Show & Dancing With The Stars. This year Noah joined the cast of Glee, and continued to amaze us with his singing and acting skills. With a role on such an awesome show, it’s only a matter of time before other hit shows search YouTube for their next superstar.

Another big win for YouTube (and the Internet in general) was the release of the AwesomenessTV (which is a YouTube network that is also now a division of DreamWorks Animation, you can check out my blog post about AwesomenessTV here: YouTube Wednesday: AwesomenessTV) film ‘Expelled’. This movie stars YouTube and Vine stars such as: Cameron Dallas, Andrea Russett, Lia Marie Johnson (who you can learn more about in my blog post about her here: YouTube Wednesday: Lia Marie Johnson), Teala Dunn (who I wrote a more detailed blog post about here: YouTube Wednesday: Teala Dunn), and others. AwesomenessTV partnered with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to make the movie available on digital platforms, and was sponsored by ‘The Coca-Cola Co.’ Expelled was also written, produced and directed by Alex Goyette (known as JouleTheif on YouTube). This was a really awesome thing to happen for YouTube, because the movie was released, written, directed, produced (and included actors), who all got their start on YouTube and/or Vine. ‘Expelled’ also reached #1 on ITunes Movies (and other digital platforms), after only 1 day of being released! This really sets the stage for our other favorite YouTube stars to follow this lead (get excited y’all…get REALLY excited!).

YouTube Wednesday: Seventeen Magazine YouTube Edition!!!

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we are going to discuss Seventeen Magazine’s newest issue. What makes this particular month so special? Because it’s the magazine’s first ‘YouTube Edition’!!! Yes, our favorite YouTubers are coming off screen to take center stage in one of the most popular magazines among pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults. I feel that this is an extremely smart move for Seventeen Magazine to take, because their audience is the same as the audience that the YouTubers featured in the magazine have. I definitely see other popular magazines following this lead, which means that we will get to see a lot more of our fav YouTube stars on our fav magazines (yay)! Now, I promise that I will try not to ruin the magazine by giving away to many details, for any of you who haven’t bought/read it in the store yet (no of course we don’t do that…why would we…moving on). Ok, let’s dive in!

First off, let’s discuss some of our fav stars that are included in the magazine. I was really excited to see that Shane Dawson did an advice segment in the magazine, because honestly you know that his advice is going to be blunt, helpful, and VERY hilarious. I think that he was the perfect choice for this column, because he has always given serious (and not so serious) advice on his channel. There were also segments that included Joey Graceffa, Tyler Oakley, Zoella, Marcus Butler, and MANY more. I also liked that the magazine features up and coming YouTubers who are ones to watch out for (and they may also appear on the blog, so stay tuned!). Although a lot of really great YouTubers were featured in the magazine, we have to spend some time talking about the cover star, Bethany Mota (you can find a blog post about her here YouTube Wednesday: Bethany Mota, the beauty guru who proved that positivity is always in style | celindareyesblog). In the interview that Seventeen did with Bethany covered topics such as: what it’s like to grow up on YouTube, how she’s dealt with bullying, the importance of finding and pursuing something that you love, and how to succeed in anything you do (I mean obviously Bethany is winning at life, so I am definitely taking her advice).

I don’t know about you, but I will definitely be rereading this edition of Seventeen over and over again (I’ve already taken a look at it, and it is AMAZING… just in case you didn’t know). With the partnership of popular YouTube channels with major TV Networks: AwesomnessTV, and TheFineBros ( who both partnered with Nickelodeon), Epic Meal Time (who partnered with FYI, which is a new TV channel related to A&E), and all of the YouTube/other internet themed categories that were included in this year’s broadcast of the Teen Choice Awards this has been a BIG year for YouTube, and the internet in general (even though some YouTube categories have been included before, I think that this is the first year that any winners were announced on-air…btw you can find a recap of the show here Monday Memos: 2014 Teen Choice Awards Recap!!! | celindareyesblog). Other YouTubers such as Tyler Oakley and iJustine have also done hosting, and correspondence work for numerous entertainment news shows. Additionally, popular YouTubers Shane Dawson, Zoella, and PointlessBlog have/are releasing books, and Shane Dawson also runs a popular podcast, and is in the process of releasing a movie and a TV show in the future. Also, ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ author John Green (you can find a review of the book & movie here: Monday Memos: The Fault In Our Stars…a star crossed love story with no faults | celindareyesblog) also initially gained fame as a popular YouTuber and one of the founders of VidCon (a popular YouTube convention where fans can meet their favorite online stars). Honestly the list goes on and on, but in short…the internet and its’ stars are quickly taking over the entertainment business that extends offline. I am really excited to see how the entertainment industry will change, as a new generation of stars are continued to be ushered in.

YouTube Wednesday: Natasha Bure, meet YouTube’s newest rising star

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ blog we are featuring Beauty Guru/Singer Natasha Bure. This young rising YouTube star has only been on YouTube for a short time, but has already proven that she is very knowledgeable about beauty, fashion, and how to capture the undivided attention of an audience. At the young age of 16, Natasha has shown through her videos that she is an intelligent, charismatic young entertainer who will very soon take the internet by storm. It’s easy to see where Natasha’s talent as an entertainer comes from, if you consider the fact that her mother is actress Candace Cameron Bure (who most know as DJ Tanner from the highly popular sitcom Full House). Trust me, once you see one of Natasha’s videos, you will instantly become a fan and will also want to see this young talent blossom into the next YouTube queen.

Natasha uploaded her first YouTube video on August 11th, 2014 Natasha Bure Official Youtube + All About It).  This video was an introductory video that tells viewers what to except on the channel in the future. I decided to mention this video not only because it is the first one on the channel, but also because even in a video with such sole content, Natasha is able to show that she is funny, relatable, comfortable on camera, and most importantly, very fun to watch. The next video that we are going to discuss is Natasha’s ‘August Favorites’ video which she uploaded on August 21st, 2014 (August Favorites ). This video covered Natasha’s favorite beauty/skin products, movies, and miscellaneous products of the month. I really loved all of the products that Natasha mentions in her video, and I also loved the mixed between high end and inexpensive items that she had in the video, I definitely think that this makes the video appeal to a wider range of audience. In this video, Natasha also allows her bubbly personality to shine, and certainly will make everyone wish they could be her BFF (also, the mean girls reference was great…Glenn Coco would be so proud). The final video that we are going to discuss in this blog post, is Natasha’s ‘Back To School Style + What’s In My Backpack’ video which was uploaded on August 29th, 2014 (Back To School Style + What’s In My Backpack). I really thought that this video was perfect to showcase because back to school time is now upon us. I absolutely LOVED the outfits that Natasha showcased because they’re cute, stylish, perfect for a wide range of styles, and school/parent approved (got to keep those ATMs…I mean parents happy…just kidding, we love them). I also really loved how Natasha was able to show how back to school style can also extend to school supplies. She was able to show pieces that were both efficient and cute. You gotta love a girl who’s so stylish that she makes you want to even copy her school supplies style (and trust me you will want to).

Didn’t I say see was amazing? As I’m sure you can already tell, Natasha is on her way to become a top YouTuber. I think that what really sets Natasha apart from all of the other beauty/fashion gurus on YouTube, is the fact that she is not only knowledgeable about both topics, but she also has an incredible level of comfort in front of the camera. She also has the ability to quickly gain an audience, in fact in only a month on YouTube (as of September 10th, 2014); she already has 2,436 subscribers, and 23,957 total channel views.  She also has over 72,000 followers on Instagram (which achieved in about 7 or 8 months), and 1,960 Twitter followers (which she accumulated in about 1 month). So as you can see, Natasha is quickly becoming the internet’s biggest not so secret talent. I am very excited to see where Natasha goes from here. It will be fun to see just how high this young star rises.

Keep in touch with Natasha!

Our two hosts for the evening were two of our favorite TV/Film stars, Tyler Posey (most well known for his role as Scott McCall in the TV version of the hit 1980s film ‘Teen Wolf’), and Sarah Hyland (who stars as Haley Dunphy on one of ABC’s most acclaimed sitcoms ‘Modern Family’). When it was announced that Tyler and Sarah were hosting, I got really excited for the show. I knew that they were going to do an awesome job, but after seeing them in action, I found that they definitely exceeded my expectations. After the show’s opening performance, Tyler and Sarah instantly showed off their comedic talents with a hilarious opening monologue where the discussed how to open the show. Tyler suggested that they sing a song (and then he started singing Demi Lovato’s hit song ‘Really Don’t Care’, and began to attempt to break dance). After a lot of debate, they decided to open the show by presenting the first award. There were numerous other funny moments, such as Tyler wearing a hula girl outfit, and Tyler reuniting with his ‘Maid in Manhattan’ costar Jennifer Lopez. I thought that Tyler and Sarah made a great duo, and were really able to play off each other’s strengths. They definitely gave an unbelievable performance that will not be forgotten. Ok, now let’s move on to the awards!!!

Awards:

Choice Summer Song: Demi Lovato ‘Really Don’t Care’

This song has definitely been a huge hit and fan favorite for Demi this year. The track peaked at #4 on the ‘US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs’, and the official music video for the track currently has 25,506,438 views, so it’s easy to see that this song is a fan favorite.

Choice Movie Actor in a Drama:  Ansel Elgort ‘The Fault in Our Stars’

Ok, we all knew that this one was coming because ‘The Fault in Our Star’ was arguably the most anticipated movie of 2014. Ansel certainly shined in this film, and proved that he is “on a roller coaster that only goes up my friend”…yes I couldn’t help it, I had to use that quote. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ has quickly catapulted Ansel onto the A-list and with the impending release of ‘Insurgent’ (the sequel to the VERY popular and successful movie ‘Divergent’), Ansel’s star is only going to rise.

Choice TV Show Drama: ‘Pretty Little Liars’

Honestly any competition that ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is in they will win, because the show is popular, well written, full of talented actors/actresses, and able to captivate an audience week after week, season after season. If you have seen the show, then you know why it won, if you haven’t seen the show, then watch it and you will know why it won.

Choice Reality Show: Keeping Up With The Kardashians

After all of these seasons, The Kardashians’ are still able to entice viewers enough to watch the ever growing family’s every move. All of the members of the family have been able to use this show to launch themselves into the career of their choosing, and in doing so have set the standard for reality stars.

Choice Movie Actor in a Sci-Fi/Fantasy: Josh Hutcherson ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

The Hunger Games has had such a large impact on pop culture, that it’s easy to see why the franchise would be nominated. Josh Hutcherson’s portrayal of one of the main male characters has definitely been a large reason as to why this franchise has done, and continues to do so well. Josh is also a fan favorite, who has grazed numerous teen magazines, and currently has 2.6 million Twitter followers…so needless to say he is a VERY big deal.

Choice Movie Actress in an Action: Shailene Woodley ‘Divergent’

Right now Shailene Woodley is one of Hollywood’s golden stars. Literally every project that this talented actress touches becomes a box office hit, so it’s easy to see why she won this award. Along with her incredible performance in ‘Divergent’, Shailene has also grazed numerous magazine covers, and causes fan mania everywhere she goes, 2014 has truly been her year, and with ‘Insurgent’ in its way there is no stopping Shailene.

Candie’s Choice Style Icon

Zendaya

Over the past few years, actress/singer/dancer Zendaya has certainly evolved within her sense of fashion, and has also proven that she is not afraid to take risks. He enviable sense of style has even landed her the role of spokes model for pop icon Madonna and her daughter Lourdes’ clothing line ‘Material Girl’. If the original Material Girl approves of her, who are we to disagree.

Choice TV Actress in a Drama: Lucy Hale

Three words for you…Pretty Little Liars. This show has seriously been gold for ABC Family ever since it first premiered, and there is no stopping this powerhouse drama. On the show, Lucy Hale has been able to develop her character of Aria into a complex young woman who we cry with, cheer for, and basically go on an emotional roller coaster for (yes it’s exhausting but we love it), it can be hard for many actresses to pull off a character such as Aria, however Lucy does so with ease.

Choice Movie Drama: The Fault in Our Stars

Ok, I think that when you hear the words “movie” and “drama” in the same sentence, you will forever think of ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. This film had audiences laughing, crying, and then crying even more. John Green was able to take the story of two young love struck teenagers with cancer, and turn it into a movie that inspired us to love a little deeper, value our friends a little more, and to never take anything (especially) life for granted. If this doesn’t scream ‘Choice Drama’ to you, then I don’t know what will.

Choice Female Web Star: Bethany Mota (you can learn all about Bethany by clicking on the blog post I wrote about her right here: YouTube Wednesday: Bethany Mota, the beauty guru who proved that positivity is always in style | celindareyesblog).

At just 18 years old, Bethany has taken the internet by storm and in doing so has set an incredibly high standard for what can be done with passion, talent, hard work, and a camera. Bethany has been able to forge her own career that has taken her from a teenager making videos in her bedroom, to a fashion/home decor designer, Red Carpet correspondent, upcoming guest host on the hit fashion reality competition ‘Project Runway’, and all around business mogul (not bad for a teenager who started making videos because she was being bullied by her middle school classmates).

Choice Male Web Star: Tyler Oakley

Much like Bethany Mota, Tyler Oakley has stated that he didn’t originally start his YouTube channel for fame, fortune, or recognition. Initially, Tyler began his YouTube channel in order to keep in touch with his friends after he went off to college. Tyler was able to expand these videos into a YouTube channel that contains various videos that cover fun and serious topics, fun TAGs with other famous YouTubers, and advice videos. Tyler has also expanded his brand into guest columnist spots on various popular websites, red carpet correspondent work, online apparel line, and advocate for organizations such as ‘The Trevor Project’ and ‘Kids Beating Cancer’.

Ultimate Choice Award: Selena Gomez

With a professional career spanning more than half a decade (over a decade if you count her ‘Barney & Friends’ years), Selena Gomez has demonstrated her strengths as an actress, singer/songwriter, and dancer. At just 15 years old, Selena began her career as the lead character of the highly successful Disney Channel show ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, and this set off an avalanche of numerous other film projects that Selena would take part in over the next few years. At age 16, Selena released her debut album ‘Kiss & Tell’ with her band ‘Selena Gomez & The Scene’. The album was certified Gold, and produced the Platinum single ‘Naturally’. Selena has since continued her success within the music industry with the release of three more albums with her band ‘The Scene’, and 1 solo album under the name ‘Selena Gomez’. Selena has also collaborated with numerous brands such as: Borden’s, State Farm, Sears, etc., on various projects. She has also released her own clothing line called ‘Dream Out Loud’ through K-Mart. With such a long and detailed resume at the tender age of 22, it is easy to see that Selena is a bright star that succeeds at whatever she attempts.

Olay Fresh Effects Breakout Star: Odeya Rush

With appearances in various commercials, short films, the Disney film ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’, and hit TV shows such as: Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Odeya is truly Hollywood’s most well kept secret…until now. In 2013 it was announced that she was cast in the upcoming Sci-Fi thriller ‘The Giver’, and since then has been cast in ‘Mary, Mother of Christ’, and a Goosebumps’ film based off of the popular R.L. Stein books. I definitely thought that Odeya deserved this award, because it is obvious that she is a star on the rise, who we will all be talking about in 2015.

Choice Music Breakout Group: 5 Seconds of Summer

With their breakout hit ‘She Looks So Perfect’, 5 Seconds of Summer exploded on to the music scene this summer, and won the hearts of music fans worldwide. The band originally obtained fame and recognition by posting cover videos of popular songs on YouTube, and touring with popular bands such as Hot Chelle Rae (in 2012), and One Direction (in 2013). However the summer of 2013 was the start of a golden era for this band, due to the success of ‘She Looks So Perfect’, and their debut self-titled album.  The band is currently (in 2014) on tour with One Direction, and are also nominated for an MTV EMA (Europe Music Awards), VMA (Video Music Awards), and the We Love Pop Awards. So yes, this is the band that everyone will be fangirling/fanboying over for a while!

Choice Female Artist: Ariana Grande

2014 has certainly been the year of Ariana, with multiple #1 hit songs, a highly successful TV show on Nickelodeon (even though the show did get cancelled this year, it still had great ratings when it was on), and a highly anticipated sophomore album , Ariana is showing no signs of slowing down. The young entertainer currently has  17.3 million very loyal followers (yeah that’s A LOT), and more or less the same numbers on all of her social media accounts, so needless to say the world loves Ariana Grande.

*There were a lot of other awards that were not given out during the show that I wanted to include, but then the blog would have been A LOT longer, so to see a complete list, please check out 2014 Teen Choice Awards – News.

Performances:

Demi Lovato ‘Really Don’t Care’:

Demi kicked off the show with her rendition of her hit song ‘Really Don’t Care’. She was dressed in a black leather jacket, and fitted black pants and top. Demi gave a very energetic performance which included a stage full of fun backup dancers that helped kick the show off on a high energy, fun vibe. Cher Lloyd appeared midway through the track (she is a featured artist on the song), and added even more energy to the performance. The crowd really seemed to love every minute of the number, and this performance definitely proved why this song won Demi ‘Choice Summer Song’ this year.

Magic! ‘Rude:

If you’ve listened to the radio this summer, then you know this hit song by ‘Magic!’. Rude has gone Platinum innumerous countries, as well as topping the charts all over the world. The band’s performance gave off a very relaxed vibe that perfectly matched the feel of the song. They also dressed in very casual clothing. You could really tell just how popular this band has become, due to the fact that they didn’t have to do very much to get the crowd involved and singing along to every word.

Rixton ‘Wait On Me’ and ‘Me and My Broken Heart’:

Next up we had a performance by the YouTube cover band turned Pop/R&B  hit makers Rixton (if you want to learn all about this AMAZING band, please click the link to read the blog post I wrote about them here: YouTube Wednesday: Rixton, the band you will be fangirling/fanboying about ALL YEAR!!! | celindareyesblog). Rixton performed their newest single (and title track of their upcoming album) ‘Wait On Me’. The band was able to get the crowd really excited for the new song, and definitely built anticipation for their upcoming album. They then really got the crowd excited when they dove into their hit single ‘Me and My Broken Heart’, which has been ALL OVER the radio this year.

Becky G ‘Shower’:

Although Becky G was a last minute replacement artist (after Rita Ora was not able to perform), she pulled off the number with ease. She went very 90’s retro with her look, by pairing a white crop top with high waisted jeans, gold high tops, and a long plaid kimono style shirt. She also had a backboard that showed different colored smiley faces with a gap between the two front teeth (which is a play off of the gap that Becky had between her two front teeth, that haters often make fun of online).Becky has had tremendous success with this new single, and is definitely on her way to becoming a HUGE name in Pop/Rap music. This performance of ‘Shower’ truly showed off the full range of Becky’s talents, by showcasing her singing, raping, and dancing skills. Through this performance, Becky was able to not only win over the affection of the crowd, but was able to show that she is already a very talented, hardworking performer that is able to adapt to nay situation that is thrown at her (and this is even more impressive when you consider the fact that she’s only 17 years old).

Jason Derulo ‘Wiggle’ and ‘Talk Dirty’:

Jason Derulo closed the show with an exceptionally well executed performance of his hit tracks ‘Wiggle’ and ‘Talk Dirty’. The number was action packed and full of energy that excited the crowd. Jason was accompanied with numerous backup dancers, and special effects such as a police car appearing on stage, and dancers dressed as police officers. I definitely thought that this was the perfect artist to close a show that was full of fun, nonstop action.

Monday Memos: The Fault In Our Stars…a star crossed love story with no faults

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we are going to discuss the topic that has been on everyone’s mind the past few months (drumroll!!!)…’The Fault In Our Stars’. Now I know that by now a lot of you have already read the book and/or have seen the movie. Am I right? Good, glad we’re on the same page! One thing that I’m sure that we’ve all noticed, is that a lot of popular young adult fiction books have been converted into movies and TV shows (Divergent, The Hunger Games, Pretty Little Liars, Twilight, Harry Potter…which I’m not sure is technically “young adult fiction” but he’s 11 in the first book so let’s go with it). Ever since this trend has emerged, book and movie lovers of several of these franchises have debated whether or not “the book or the movie is better”. Personally I’m usually a fan of the books and movies in a franchise but I know not everyone agrees (it’s ok if you disagree with me, we’re still besties. Ok? Yay!). So if you have read ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ and are unsure about whether or not you will like the movie version of the story, then read on and I will discuss with you the reasons why you will love the novel and movie versions of this story. I’m going to talk a little bit about the basic plot of the story, but not too many spoilers I promise.

The main plot of this story revolves around a teenage girl named Hazel, who has cancer and lungs that do not properly work on their own. Hazel is a very witty girl who tries to make jokes about her disease, but the fact that she has been sick for 3 years is starting to take a toll on her. One day in her cancer support group, she meets a boy named Augustus (Gus), and then EVERYTHING changes. I’m not going to tell y’all what else happens, because you’re going to want to see the movie. The story also includes appearances from Hazel and Gus’ friend Isaac (who also has cancer but I’m not going to tell you what kind…just remember the word robot…it will make sense when you see the film). Hazel and Gus instantly bond after they meet, and go on adventures that teach them about friendship, love, hope, and the true concept of “forever”. I’m not going to tell y’all any more information about the plot line, because I don’t want to ruin the story, but trust me when so say that this is NOT just another teen love story (I promise EVERYONE will enjoy and relate to the movie and the book).

The next thing that I want to speak to y’all about is the incredible acting in this film. Shailene Woodley (who plays Hazel), really embodies the character, and is able to make you feel every emotion that Hazel encounters. Although we’ve become very familiar with Shailene’s work over the past few years ( ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’, ‘The Descendants’, ‘Divergent’, and numerous other projects), she shows just how much she is growing as an actress through her work in this film. Ansel Elgort (who plays Gus), shines equally as bright, in his first role as a leading man. Although Ansel has appeared in the films: ‘Carrie’ and ‘Divergent’, he really demonstrates what a great actor he is in ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. He’s able to take the charming and humorous character of Gus, and portray him on screen in a way that makes us really care about him. If you’ve read the book, then I know that you have a certain idea of what these characters are like, and I promise that Shailene and Ansel’s portrayals of Hazel and Gus will NOT disappoint you. If you fell in love with these characters in the novel, then you will fall in love with then all over again in the film.

So as y’all can see, this story made a very nice translation on to the silver screen. Personally the book and movie made me laugh and cry hysterically (thank you John Green for playing with my emotions). I truly believe that if you are a fan of the book, then you will LOVE the movie. Shailene and Ansel do an AMAZING job bringing Hazel and Gus to life, and cause you to fall even more in love with the characters (yes it’s possible…really it is). So if you’re worried that the movie will “ruin” the book for you, just stay calm, grab some popcorn, and remember that “[We’re] on a roller coaster that only goes up my friend” (if you’ve seen the movie or read the book then you know this quote, and yes I know that the word in the beginning of the quote is I’m, but there is no “I” here, we are in this together people of the internet).
