YouTube Wednesday: Sloan…The Female Otaku we all need in our lives

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to discuss an AMAZING YouTuber who you will all be super obsessed with. Are you an otaku? Do you love anime? Are you always looking for interesting new YouTubers to obsess over? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you’re probably already subscribed to Sloan The Female Otaku, but just in case you’re not, please read on to find out exactly why you NEED to subscribe to her right now! Also, she’s a part of a very interesting podcast called ‘The Kotatsu’ with some other awesome YouTubers, so definitely go check that out too. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The first video we’re going to talk about is Sloan’s ‘Top 10 Summer + Fall 2014′ video, which was released on November 18th, 2014. This is definitely a good “intro to Sloan” video because you instantly become mesmerized by her fun, quirky personality. Sloan’ quick wit will reel you in, but her deep knowledge of anime will definitely keep youhooked. Next up we have her ‘Ore Monogatari!! Epiosde 24 Finale Review’, which was uploaded on September 23rd, 2015. I chose this particular episode review because I’m a HUGE fan of this show (seriously watch this show, it will make your feels have all the feels!). Honestly as much as we would all love to sit down and listen to an hour long discuss about all of the great anime out there, who really has time for that. Right? Right! Well fear not people of the internet, Sloan has you covered! Her episodes reviews are detailed enough to make you want to watch the anime she’s reviewing, but concise enough to fit into your busy schedule of binging Netflix…I mean handling important adult business. Yeah, let’s go with that!

Moving on, let’s discuss Sloan’s ‘Summer 2016 AMV’, which was uploaded on September 20th, 2016. Let me just say that I LOVED this video! It was such a cool idea to do an AMV as sort of seasonal wrap up video. 5 smiley faces on this one Sloan! I feel as if the art of the AMV got lost somewhere around 2010 and I for one miss it. Bravo Sloan! Seriously though that AMV is really well done so y’all should check it out! Lastly we’re going to talk about her ‘I MET joey the anime man (and Akidearest)’ video  which was uploaded on February 15th, 2017 and is apart of her ‘Sloan Vlogs’ series. Now let’s just go ahead and admit it, we love it when YouTubers fangirl (or fanboy) over other YouTubers! It was so much fun to see Sloan freak out over possibly missing a chance to meet one of her favorite YouTubers, and then have a fangirl attack when she finally finds him. This video takes you on a true journey, and you’ll love every minute of it! It’s so cool to see that deep down Sloan is just abnormal crazy fangirl like the rest of us.

Monday Memos: ‘The Sky Between You and Me’ Book Review

“Again
Once I whittle that number on the scale down
Which wont be hard since I haven’t been hungry lately
It won’t be hard now that I have a goal
Smaller
Lighter
Leaner
In the saddle
It won’t be hard
Because I’m willing to do whatever
It takes
To win.” -Rae from ‘The Sky Between You and Me’

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to review a new book that you should definitely add to your Goodreads reading challenge (yeah, yeah, I know that your TBR is already insane, but this book is worth the room. Trust me). So what is this amazing book you ask? I’m glad you asked people of the internet! Today we’re reviewing ‘The Sky Between You and Me’ by Catherine Alene. Not only is the story interesting, but will definitely leave a lasting impact on you once you finish it. I will try to make this review as spoiler free as possible, so if you’re ready let’s get to the review. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!
Our story revolves around high school junior Raesha (aka Rae), a rodeo rider who dreams of winning Nationals just like her mother did when she was in high school. We are then introduced to Rae’s best friend Asia, Asia’s boyfriend Micah, and Rae’s boyfriend Cody. Everything in Rae’s life seems to be going well until a new girl named Kierra moves into town and begins to disrupt all of the order in Rae’s life. Throughout the story we learn that Rae’s mother died from cancer when she was a little girl and Rae always carried the guilt due to the circumstances of her mother’s death. Due to Rae’s growing loneliness because of Kierra’s presence in her life, as well as Rae’s father’s constant absence due to his job, Rae quickly falls into the grip of an eating disorder. She begins by just telling herself that she will lose a little weight in order to fit into her mother’s old riding saddle, however things get bad VERY quickly. Throughout the rest of the novel we see how Rae’s eating disorder affects her life, and the lives of those around her in both expected and unexpected ways. This is truly a powerful story with an amazing message of hope that doesn’t sugar coat the dark side of eating disorders.

I not only really enjoyed the plot of this story, but also the relationship between Rae and her father. You could really see the love that they had for each other, as well as his need to try to fill the void that her mother’s death has left in her life, and his terror when he feels as if he failed this task. I also really enjoyed the fact that Rae and her friends were from a small country town and enjoyed completing in rodeos. This was definitely a fresh change of pace from your typical YA setting. Lastly I personally really loved the fact that the entire story was written in verse, which added a unique vibe to the story. Although there was SOOOO much I loved about this book, there were some problems. Firstly I HATED Rae’s boyfriend Cody! He was a completely unlikeable character who made me want to slap Rae for even dealing with him. Cody openly flirts with Kierra every chance he gets, and is completely unsupportive of Rae, even when he finds out about her eating disorder. Also, the story definitely had sections that were very slow and boring, although this didn’t happen often, it definitely lost the book half a smiley face on it’s overall score. Lastly, I really wish that we had spent more time on the obvious connection between Rae’s mother’s death and Rae’s eating disorder. I know that eating disorders are very complicated matters and there is never a necessary “cause” of this disease however, I really feel that this event had a lasting impact on Rae and thus it would’ve been nice to dive more into that. In conclusion I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story and doesn’t mind books written in free verse. If you don’t typically enjoy this style of writing then this maybe a hard story for you to get through however, I definitely suggest that you give it a chance. Because of all of this, I give ‘The Sky Between You and Me’ 4 1/2 smiley faces (due to the slow parts of the story). This is definitely worth your time, and I suggest you pick it up right away!

YouTube Wednesday: Wotso Videos…if you’re a fun person then this channel has the videos for you

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to discuss Wotso Videos, a very cool YouTube channel that you DEFINTELY need in your life. If you love pop culture, Disney, and numerous other fun topic then this is the channel you need to be subscribed to right now. I’m serious, take a moment and subscribe to this channel right now I’ll wait right here for you. Have you already subscribed? Good! If you still need convincing then please read on. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The first video that we’re going to discuss is Wotso’s ‘How did Gill get his scar video’, which was posted on June 29th, 2016. This video is apart of Wotso’s ‘Discovering Disney’ series, and explains his theory as to why Gill from ‘Finding Nemo’ has a scar. The video is not only entertaining and fun, but also very factual and thought provoking (without making you feel llike you’re back in school). If you love Disney theories (and honestly who doesn’t love ANYTHING related to Disney) then you’ll want to check out the many other videos in this series. The next video that we’re going to discuss is Wotso’s ‘ Ariel Ruled Cindrella’s Kingdom’, which was uploaded on November 15th, 2016 (you can check out this video below). This video discusses the theory that Ariel is Cinderella’s mother-in-law. When I first saw the title of this video, it intantly intrigued me because how cool would it be if these two Disney princesses were actually connected. Although I won’t spoil the video for you, I will say that Wotso brings up some very interesting points in this video, that will really make you question how the other Disney princesses might be connected. Maybe we just don’t know that mouse as well as we thought we did.

Next up we have Wotso’s ‘How Magic Works in Harry Potter! Why Are Spells Spoken And When Do Wizards Need Wands’, which was uploaded on November 22nd, 2016. THis is another entertaining and well thought out video that all Harry Potter fans will fall in love with. Honestly I never really thought abiout the fact that some magical beings say spells and use wands, while others use a wand but perform spells non-verbally, and others don’t use either tool. As any Harry Potter fan knows, J.K. Rowling has always been very detailed with her work so I honestly believe that this video touches upon a lot of info that J.K. must have considered while writing her books. Eithier way this is a fun video for all of us muggles who are dying for another taste of the wizarding world. The last video that we’re going to discuss is Wotso’s ‘Belle Has Stockholm Syndrome?’ video, which was uploaded on March 14th, 2017 (you can check out the video below). This video touches upon a infamous question that has floated around the internet for YEARS. Again I’m not going to spoil the video by revealing Wotso’s position on the question, however I will say that he does a very good job of explaining his position and has definitely convinced me that he’s correct. If you want an answer to the ‘Beauty and The Beast’ question that is as old as time, then definitely check out this video right away!

Monday Memos: Book review of ‘The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett’

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we’re going to review a very unique book. If you haven’t heard of ‘The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett’ by Chelsea Sedoti then you need to keep reading because this book will most likely make it on to your TBR list this year. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book however, I would never lie to y’all in a review and this book definitely has some issues that we’re going to discuss. Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

‘The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett’ begins by introducing us to our protagonist Hawthorne. She is a young teenage girl who becomes fascinated by the disappearance of her classmate Lizzie Lovett. Hawthorne and Lizzie definitely fall into the stereotypical “loner” & “popular girl” roles and because of this Hawthorne hates Lizzie. Now as you’ve probably predicted, Hawthorne comes from a very eccentric family, except her brother who is your stereotypical popular jock who has a huge crush on Lizzie. Ok so now that we have our foundation set up, let’s talk about what I liked about this novel. Hawthorne. Yeah, that’s honestly all there is. She was a very witty, funny, and an all around enjoyable character (at first anyway, but more about that later). Now don’t get me wrong I don’t have a problem with stereotypical YA novels that follow familiar and predictable tropes however this novel just feels confused and disjointed. The plot begins as a mystery, then adds possible supernatural elements, then quickly changes into a romance (sort of), and shifts the initial mystery into a side-story. The ending is completely unsatisfying and doesn’t make a lot of sense, and the romance is awkward to say the least. I’m not going to talk too much about the “romance” because it would take another blog post to explain everything wrong with this relationship. We get introduce to Hawthorne’s love interest Enzo early on in the novel and he is completely unlikeable and uninteresting throughout the story. The entire time I was reading this story I just wanted to reach into the book and slap Hawthorne for wasting my time on him (she can be with him in off-screen land, but why do I have to suffer through this). Lastly, we land back on Hawthorne. Her character is my favorite and least favorite part of this book. She started off as such a unique, interesting character and turned into your stereotypical dumb, petty YA girl. It’s not often that we see new, interesting female characters in YA and it’s just so sad that the author ruined such a potentially great character.

So this leads us to what you’ve all been waiting for…the final thoughts. Honestly I HIGHLY suggest that you skip this one. It definitely gets a 1 out 5 smiley faces for the book’s lack of focus, uninteresting characters, and overall boring tone. Personally I only finished this book because I received an ARC and committed to writing an honest review. With so many other amazing YA books out there I wouldn’t waste your time with this one.

Monday Memos: You Before Anyone Else Review

“Maybe this is the definition of a summer fling? Finding someone you can be with like this, uninhibited. Not bogged down with thoughts of the future. Not bogged down with thoughts of much else outside of this moment and us.Finley from ‘You Before Anyone Else’ 51f3ztkhf7l-_sy344_bo1204203200_

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ we will be reviewing the book ‘You Before Anyone Else` by Julie Cross and Mark Perini. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this amazing book earlier this year and am super excited to share this book with you! If you`re looking for a story with drama, heartbreak, love, and so much more, than this is the book for you. Are you already super excited? Yeah you are (just so you know, this will be a spoiler free review because y’all NEED this book in you life…like seriously you do)! Ok let’s jump into the review. Ready? Ok, lets go!!!

‘You Before Anyone Else’ is a YA romance which centers around teens Eddie and Finley as they navigate the difficult world of modeling in New York City. One night they meet at a party and thus begins an intense journey that will teach them both about love, sacrifice, and what it truly means to find happiness. On the surface `You Before Anyone Else’ seems like a very basic and predictable YA romance novel. Finley, the good girl who knits in her spare time and helps her disabled father care for her younger brothers decides to shed her image by hooking up with “edgy, bad boy” Eddie and then moving on with her life. However, life has a way of wrecking plans, and once you begin to learn more about these characters you see that they both have deep, personal scars that cause them to always make decisions that are in the best interest of those around them, instead of figuring out what they actually want. ‘You Before Anyone Else’ is told in alternating points of view so we get a chance to see the story from both character`s perspective. This can be a very difficult storytelling devise however Cross and Perini pull this off perfectly. Honestly this story will make you laugh, cry, and instantly take you on a beautiful journey that you never want to end. I would definitely give this book a 4 out of 5 smiley faces and suggest that you pick up your copy now…as in this very second…the links are below, honestly what are you waiting for?

‘Learning To Fly’ is about a 12 year girl named  Max. She is a tomboy who enjoys hunting, fishing, playing sports, and just generally having fun with her next door neighbors Peter and Kyle. Max’s world is turned upside down when she discovers the world of competitive cheerleading. At first Max decides that the glitter and bows are too girly for her, but through some persuasion from her dad, Max decides to give cheerleading a try. Throughout the course of the story Max finds friends, enemies, and possibly two potential love interests (let the shipping wars begin!). YouTube Wednesday: Sophie’s Series…the booktuber that you will love fangirling out with

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ we’re going to talk about an amazing BookTuber that you NEED to be subscribed to. I’m serious. Go subscribe right now & then we’ll continue. Don’t worry I’ll wait. Did you subscribe? Awesome! Now that you’ve already made one great decision today, make another one by sticking around to find out why you’ll love Sophie’s channel (trust me you made the right decision by subscribing). Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

The first video that we’re going to talk about is Sophie’s ‘The Booktube Newbie Tag!’, which was uploaded on March 27th, 2015 (you can check out this video below). This is a really great video to start off with because it allows you to not only get a glimpse of Sophie’s personality, but also her love of books. In this video Sophie allows us to really feel like we know her by explaining why she started a BookTube channel, what book/book series got her into reading, and what fun & unique things she can bring to the BookTube community. After watching this video you’ll feel like Sophie is already your bestie, and it will leave you wanting to know even more about her. Luckily for us, we can learn more about Sophie in her ‘FIVE OF MY AUTO BUY AUTHORS’ video, which was uploaded on July 10th, 2015. Honestly you can learn A LOT about a person based off of who their fav authors are. When you’re a bookworm you read A LOT of books, and I mean A LOT of books so because of this, we all have a small list of authors who we love so much that you can blindly buy any book they release and know that you’ll likely fall in love with it. It’s fun to see our fav BookTubers nerd out with us.

Next up we have Sophie’s ‘BOOKS I’M BRINGING TO COLLEGE!’ video, which was uploaded on September 26th, 2015. Ok, real talk for a second everyone. Now if you’re a book nerd then you know that this is a problem that you either have faced, or will face in your lifetime. For most of us books are like family, they take you to far away places when you need an escape, put a smile on your face during good times, and offer you a warm sheet to cry on during bad times. So the prospect of leaving behind these treasures when we pursue higher education is really sad. Luckily, Sophie is here to remind us that it’s fine if you take some of your books with you on this adventure they call college, and even describes how she decided which books to take. This video is a MUST WATCH for all book addicts. The last video that we’re going to talk about is Sophie’s ‘ANTICIPATED RELEASES OF 2016’ video, which was uploaded on January 9th, 2016 (you can check out the video below). In this video Sophie gives us a list of some of the INCREDIBLE books she’s excited for this year, and also a quick summary of why she’s excited for these books. If you love books then this video will definitely get you hyped for the many awesome 2016 releases (it’s going to be a VERY good year people of the internet!). So now that you’re completely addicted to Sophie’s channel, go check out the rest of her videos, I promise that this is one channel that you’ll constantly have on replay.

Monday Memos: Interview with singer/songwriter/actress/fashion designer Lisa Loeb

Hello people of the internet!!! On today’s ‘Monday Memos’ I have the honor of sharing an interview I recently did with two-time Grammy nomineelisa loeb interview photo Lisa Loeb! You may know Lisa from her platinum-selling hit #1 single ‘Stay (I Missed You), her various voice-over roles in shows such as ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series’, ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’, ‘Doc McStuffins’, etc., her eyewear line, or the various other projects that Lisa has had over the past two decades. In this interview we discuss Lisa’s music, eyewear line, her charitable foundation ‘Camp Lisa’, her musical influences, and so much more! Also please keep an eye out for Lisa’s singles ‘3,2,1 Let Go’, and ‘The Disappointing Pancake’, which will be released on vinyl via Blacktop Records on July 8th, 2016. You can also pick up the records at any of Lisa’s upcoming shows:

June 21 – Wolf Trap Theater-in-the-Woods, Virginia

June 22 – Sundown Music Series, Haddon Heights, NJ

July 10 – Oakville Children’s Festival, Ontario

July 11 – Stratford Masonic Concert Hall – Stratford, Ontario (SOLD OUT)

July 12 – Stratford Masonic Concert Hall – Stratford, Ontario

July 13 – Adelaide Hall – Toronto, Ontario

So now let’s get to the interview! Ready? Ok, let’s go!!!

Celinda: First of all I would like to thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview. Personally I am such a huge fan of your music, and I know that my readers are excited to hear about all of your new projects. Since we are on the topic of music, what/who would you say originally sparked your interest in music? Also, which bands/artists have influenced your music that would surprise your fans?

Lisa: That’s such a huge question. There are so many musicians and performers who inspired me. My family, the music around me growing up, my friends’ taste in music, the music I was played at school and the music we sang and played at school, music I learned in piano and later guitar lessons, music on the radio.  Wow, so much music all around me.  I usually think of The Police as the band that made me want to play guitar in a band and write music.  I also loved David Bowie’s dramatic singing, writing, storytelling, and all-around aura.  I’m hugely influenced by Led Zeppelin, Olivia Newton John, The Cure, and soft pop from the 1970’s like Bread.

Celinda: I can definitely hear all of those influences in your music. So, how does it feel that Stay (I Missed You) is still such a recognizable and beloved song 22 years after its’ initial release?

Lisa: I love it.  I think it’s incredible that people connect with me and my song so many years later.  People really have sweet nostalgia as well as a current identification with the song. I think that’s why it’s still so powerful so many years later.

Celinda: Now let’s move on to the live action acting you’ve done on television and for films. Did you always want to foray into acting or was it something that you grew to love later in life?

Lisa: I always wanted to be actor, maybe even before I wanted to be a musician. I like the idea of being able to try on different characters and jobs and personalities.  (That just sounded crazy.) I think it’s amazing to put yourself in another person’s shoes.  I loved doing theater in school and college and always studied theater during the summers.  I still use my acting training a lot during live performances and interpreting my own songs night after night. I still hope to spend more time training and doing more acting soon!

Celinda: That’s so exciting, I know I speak for all of your fans when I say we’re excited to see which acting projects you might take on in the future! Along with your live action acting, you’ve also voiced numerous characters on various videos games and television shows such as: ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series’, ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’, ‘Doc McStuffins’, etc., do you feel that your experience as a recording artist has helped you become more comfortable and confident as a voice actress?

Lisa: My acting experience coupled with recording music in the studio has really come together for voice acting.  It’s a place I feel really comfortable and love the collaboration of working with producers, writers, directors, and engineers to come up with the right sound for the animated shows, commercials, and other voice work I do.

Celinda: I would like to take a moment to mention that I love your eyewear line; all of the pieces are gorgeous and very fashionable. Is there a story behind the creation of your eyewear line, or is it something you’ve always wanted to do?

Lisa: The eyewear line is a dream come true.  I’m a huge fan of glasses and finding the perfect pair for myself!  I think glasses can add so much to a person’s face and can help express how a person sees life and how they relate to others.  I love that my eyewear line can help women look beautiful, stylish, flirty, classic, and confident. People look to me for that and now I can finally help people.  Literally, fans and people who like my glasses and my look stop me on the street to talk about glasses. I thought it was time for me to get more involved.  We have lots of tortoiseshell, pops of color, shapes and sizes for different faces and skin tones.  I love when people tell me that they wear their glasses because I wear my glasses.

Celinda: All of the pieces are amazing; you definitely have a great eye for fashion. Moving on, I would like to firstly congratulate you for all of the accomplishments that your organization ‘The Camp Lisa Foundation’ has achieved; it is truly inspiring to see artists give back. What would you say has been the most rewarding part of ‘Camp Lisa’, and what do you hope the foundation will accomplish in the future?

Lisa: It’s amazingly rewarding knowing that kids are going to have a summer camp experience, helping them build their confidence and character as well as connecting them to summer fun. I hope the foundation can continue to send more kids to summer camp! Buying my Camp Lisa record, my “Wake Up!” Blend coffee from https://www.coffeefool.com/collections/charity-coffees and making direct donations to me through The Camp Lisa Foundation through www.LisaLoeb.com are great ways that you can help!

Celinda: Your foundation’s mission is truly beautiful and will definitely continue making a positive impact on numerous children. So I read on your website that you earned a degree in comparative literature from Brown University; did you always aspire to become an author? Also, what inspired you to write children’s books?

Lisa: I really should have studied theater, music, psychology- all areas that interested me the most, but at the time I felt I needed a liberal arts major, and that was it.  I’ve always enjoyed interpretation, and meta-thinking, and overthinking, so it seemed like a good major. I think it’s important to spend quiet connected time with kids, away from the TV and the computers and phones.  These illustrated books help a parent/caregiver/teacher do just that.  These books are fun to explore and read and re-read. I made two kids’ books of lyrics, activities, and recipes for kids ‘Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs’ and ‘Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ & Shakin’: The Air Band Song and Other Toe-tapping Tunes’ and I think a lot of those songs would make really great board books one song at a time.  I have a children’s book up my sleeve now too!

Celinda: That’s so interesting! I know we’re all super excited to read and hear this new book! Moving back to the topic of music for a second, your singles ‘3,2,1 Let Go’ and ‘The Disappointing Pancake’ will be released on 7inch vinyl on July 8th, 2016 in Canada via Blacktop Records. Personally I love the throwback feel of vinyl that you just can’t get with digital or even cd releases, but what inspired you to release these singles on vinyl?

Lisa: “3,2,1 Let Go!” is the kind of song you want to hear on vinyl, and since there’s only one song on each side, you really can focus on listening over and over to each song, since once you hear the songs, you’ll want to listen over and over. ; )  “The Disappointing Pancake” is one of my most popular songs, taken from both the ‘Camp Lisa’ record and the ‘Silly Sing-Along’ book, so I thought I’d highlight it here on this special release.   Plus, even though it was originally written for kids, I think grownups enjoy hearing it- a story that’s different from your lost love song.

Celinda: Thank you again Lisa for taking the time to speak with me today, it was truly an honor. Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to your fans who are reading this interview?

Lisa: I can’t wait to come to Canada!  It’s been really too long since I’ve been there.  Yay!  Yay for us.  I can’t wait to see you!
